Members of the U.S. Army’s 43rd Medical Detachment Veterinary Service Support traveled from Fort Hood earlier this month, trading their traditional training environment for a poultry anatomy lab. 🐔
Hosted by Morgan Farnell, Ph.D., and Pramir Maharjan, Ph.D., the poultry veterinary medicine training paired hands-on anatomy instruction with lectures covering disease recognition, flock health and management practices. Participants explored how poultry health concerns are identified, managed and prevented within commercial production systems.
Experts from the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, Texas Poultry Federation and National Poultry Improvement Plan also contributed to the program. Their participation connected diagnostic testing, disease prevention, industry priorities and flock management within one comprehensive training experience.
The collaboration gave the service members a closer look at the many disciplines involved in poultry veterinary medicine and provided practical knowledge they can carry into future veterinary service, animal health, and food protection responsibilities.

Through their internships, our students are developing technical knowledge, strengthening professional skills, and gaining firsthand experience that will help prepare them for their future careers. This summer, we have 37 students across 6 different states and 2 countries!
We are equally grateful for the companies and organizations that welcome our students, invest in their development, and provide meaningful opportunities to learn from industry professionals. Thank you for helping shape the next generation of leaders!
