This queen mother has been rocking it out for 2 seasons now - she’s one of our breeder queens that we brought in from out of state. She’s a California queen that was instrumentally inseminated. It’s a strange practice but ensures that the VSH traits to battle varroa through genetics as well as other chosen traits like temperament, production, and overall performance are controlled. Since queen bees are generally openly mated they seek out 10-20 drones from the area around them and the genetics is largely unknown until you start to observe the traits over time. This gives us a great baseline for breeding queen bees that work well in our operation and is just one of many steps we’ve taken to have better bees each year. She’s a winner 🏆
