The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences was well represented at this year’s annual American Association of Bovine Practitioners meeting!

Eight students competed as two teams in the AABP Quiz Bowl, with one team advancing to the semifinal round. Sonali Puri took first place and Frederik von Lilienskjold took second place in the student presentation competition for “Bilateral Pyelonephritis and Elevated Copper in a Brahman Cow” and “Ashes, Ashes, the Brangus Fell Down,” respectively.

Fabiola Oyervides presented “Identifying Protective and Disease Risk-Associated F***l Microbiomes in Neonatal Calves,” and Hayden Holwick presented “Greatly distended and pendulous abdomen in a 5-year-old cow.”

Faculty also represented the VMBS through presentations and seminars: Dr. Dan Posey at the Livestock Educators Symposium; Dr. Dusty Nagy on “strategies for maintaining longterm success in livestock in academic practice”; Dr. Michael Kleinhenz on anesthesia, analgesia and sedation; and Dr. Mona Bandyopadhyay on “Hemoperfusion with a polymer or carbon hemoperfusion column is feasible and safe in goats.”

Getting sick can look very different for people with Down syndrome; illnesses that are mild for most people may lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, hospitalization, or intensive care.

Researchers at the VMBS and the Texas A&M Health Institute of Biosciences and Technology have identified evidence for a previously unknown pathway that may help explain those immune challenges.

Before every run, Devin Young leans toward her 12-year-old sorrel gelding, “Jettin’ to Doc’s Bar,” better known as “Tequila,” and says, “If anybody can do it, it’s you.”

This summer, that trust carried Young and Tequila through the weeklong College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyoming, where the pair captured the women’s barrel racing national championship, leading Young to become the first Texas A&M Rodeo Team athlete to win an individual national title since 2024.
