When Mitsuo Shimofuji founded ZettaJoule, his vision reached beyond technology. He believed solving global challenges required collaboration across continents and cultures – especially the United States and Japan. His global perspective and commitment to Texas A&M University embody that vision, adding to the College of Engineering’s legacy while creating new opportunities for faculty, students and researchers in the Department of Nuclear Engineering.

Now, his company has built on that commitment through the ZettaJoule Nuclear Engineering Endowed Scholarship and the Mitsuo Shimofuji Endowed Career Development Professorship — the department’s first named faculty position in decades.

What were our Atomic Aggies up to this summer? Ayden Hogan (right) worked at Paragon Energy Solutions as a core vision intern. He worked alongside other core vision engineers to support nuclear projects using software such as Altium, LTspice, and SolidWorks. Ayden assisted data analysis, troubleshooted issues, and documented the engineering process through engineering change notices, inspection procedures, acceptance procedures, test instructions, and receipt inspection tests.

“No matter how much you know, there is always more to learn from the knowledge of others around you,” Ayden said.

What a great two days of discussing the present and future of AI in nuclear! 👍

Today, Division Director of Scientific Computing & AI Christopher Ritter from Idaho National Laboratory delivered a keynote presentation about the Genesis Mission. Throughout the day, scientists, faculty, and industry representatives discussed the perspective of national laboratories, academia, and nuclear companies on using artificial intelligence to bring nuclear engineering advancements to deployment.
