That doesn't work in real life...until it does.
The truth is everything works and nothing works depending on how smart you are in applying it. You can't just fight with techniques. You have to know distancing, timing, and strategy. This is only developed thru some level of sparring. You have to put on at least some minimal gear and go at it about 30 to 50%. This level of intensity allows you to stop and repeat to fix problems.
For instance, let's say we set up person A doing only boxing as offense and person B only wing chun as defense, moving around. Person B gets hit, timer stops and B asks person A to repeat what he just did. The idea is to try and figure out which wing chun technique would work better. Then have a round of non stop, 50% level sparring. I do not allow hard sparring. There is no sense in getting killed trying to learn how to not get killed.
You will find it's not that a technique is unusable, its the way you're using it. This makes sparring a very realistic lab for finding out.
And that's that.

Never Assume
I read a lot of comments on clips from internet martial arts teachers. While most comments are positive there's always the " try that in the ring", "that wouldn't work in the ring", or the ever narcissistic " that wouldn't work on me".
Let's break down first of all what Asian martial arts are in 2025. They are an ACTIVITY for health, enjoyment, and self defense ( against non professional fighters, aka 99% of the public). The idea that they wouldn't work ignores the fact that for centuries they did work. What changed? Martial arts became degraded into martial science, where only rudimentary techniques that could be figured out were basterdized and used for human cockfighting. Meanwhile traditional martial arts didn't take notice of what they were up against and didn't upgrade their training methods. They doubled down on chi gung and stability when they should have emphasized timing and mobility within the framework of their art. In other words , more pad drills.
If I have any clarity in this at all, it's that I've also studied boxing. One sparring match with even college boxing club members will show you whether your kung fu conception works or needs work.
I say " conception " because it's less about technical skill than how you conceive your art working in the ring. Do you really think you can tan da against a hook punch or would you need to use a simpler, still wingchun, but simpler technique? Are you emphasizing standing stability or should you be emphasizing mobility? Your art contains all of these things, so are you using them?
We don't have to change but we do have to adapt.
And that's that.
Thinking about renting a hotel conference room for a seminar in College Station. It would be an all day thing with snacks and a certificate of completion ceremony at the end of the day. This special class will cover a condensed, practical form of wing chun that you can put to use right away. Please let me know your interest by posting interested in the comments.

YouTube in a nutshell.
The American mentality vs Asian mentality pertaining to martial arts is a big problem for me at least. And of course not all Americans follow this cultural specific. But in general, we Americans like dojos and training facilities. Diplomas and belts. Accolades and awards. Tournaments and competitions. Belt ranking and organizations. Prestigious lineages and teaching appoints. Military experience. MMA cage fighting debauchery.
I have none of the above, except the lineage. But even though some people visited Taiwan and used pictures with my teacher to claim to have studied with him, I have not used my teacher's name to make even a penny. Those who claim to be his student can easily be refuted by MY collection of pics and my teaching I can assure you.
The internet produced a lot of clout seekers. There's just too much money to be made. Meanwhile, I practice my kung Fu and honor my teacher's memory.
And that's that.
Coach Randy's Rules for Life
1. I don't own that parking space, so choke on it.
2. You dont have to be a dick to have one.
3. 80% of life is a distraction designed for your destruction.
4. I dont always tell the truth, but I always speak it.
5. The kindest cut heals the most.
6. It is your fault. Do better.
7. Rights will get you into trouble. We have privileges.
8. The only opinion that matters is what your children think of you
9. A week equals six days plus Sunday.
10. If most of society is doing it, run the opposite direction.
The measure of kung fu skill is not your physique, it's whether or not can you deflect energy and transfer it into your opponent. Without this you are doing kickboxing (blocking and hitting), not kung fu. Of course parrying and countering are a part of it, but all kung fu styles also have sticking, pulling, and uprooting. This is what we call the Chinese flavor. All styles use what we call the 8 Body Weapons for short power striking and uprooting the opponent. It takes a long time to learn, and the the chance of learning it incorrectly is fairly high. I tell a lot of people to just learn kickboxing if you want to be able to fight in a short amount of time. But for those who want more, there is kung fu.
Hope to share this knowledge with you all soon.
Hi all! So I'm currently not in BCS now, but here's the deal: if any of you can get a group of 10 or so people, I will come to do a Starter Seminar for you all. This seminar will be all day and cover the basics, enough for you to practice for a year. I will also help you online afterwards. I think $100 per person would cover all my expenses. I'm not intending to rake in a bunch of money, just cover expenses and time. So hook up with me if you have a location and people interested. I promise you a good class full of things you might not have been exposed to. Take care.

I hate these karate and kung fu myths that americans believe and having to answer these stupid questions over and over:
1. No I do not have ultra sensory about you coming up behind me or sucker punching me.
2. No I cannot " block" every punch.
3. Yes I can break boards. And my hands hurt for a week afterwards.
4. No I do not have a blackbelt. Neither did my teacher. Neither did his teacher and so on.
5. No, blackbelt does mean you are a deadly fighter. It means you learned all basics.
6. Yes, I can do " nunchucks" but I do them the traditional way and you would be bored.
7. There is no "what do you do if". There is no technique for this and that. Flow.
8. "What if I have a gun"? Oh, so what if I have a cannon?
9. " get into your karate stance". There is no stance.
10. It's not " hai ya!". Its "Huh"! from the gut.
This is a misunderstanding that I'm a little tired of so let me say clearly:
THERE ARE NO BELTS OR DIPLOMAS IN CHINESE KUNG FU!!!!!!!!!!!@@@@
None of my teachers, including my present one, had/ has a diploma on his wall or a belt around his waist. ZERO. Also we SELDOM have a " dojo" or gym. Most people practice in parks. Only the SUCCESSOR to the teacher is ever given any special honor, IF any is named at all.
Mr. Miyagi was correct. In Okinawa, belts are only to hold up your pants. These meaningless rankings were created by the japanese school system and are not part of traditional martial arts. ZERO.
The Three Groups You Have to Appeal to if you run a Dojo:
Yep, unfortunately, running a dojo in the States has its thorns in the side. Here are a few:
1. Karate Karen, aka soccer mom asking when will her kid make blackbelt. Well, junior can do that kick on his right leg, but can he do that from his left? Does he have equal balance and power? If not...order your own belt, cause hes not getting one from me.
2. GI Joe. You see it in the advertising, former green beret, former army ranger. Karate and kungfu have nothing to do with the US Military. Has it been co-opted? Yes. Compromised? Most certainly. But Asian martial arts are Asian martial arts. Unfortunately, you have to put the military service in your ads to Americanize it ( yeah he took that oriental crap and used it against them).
3. MMA , aka, I'm here to train. Do you know what train means to me? It definitely isnt banging punching pads all class. I have no "training facilities" because the only facilities you need are fresh air in a good park. I dont teach ringcraft.
