FIND – School for Spiritual Direction and Formation announces new director
Kay Sevick of The Woodlands will become the director of FIND – School for Spiritual Direction and Formation effective July 1, according to Rev. Dave Scheider, FIND’s board chair.
Sevick has begun transitioning to the position with Kathleen Phillips, who will retire June 30 after 20 years in the position.
FIND is a three-year school for clergy and lay which meets once a month to train people for the ministry of spiritual direction as well as formation as applied to various other ministries. It is an ecumenical school that began in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in 1997.
Scheider said the board considered Sevick’s training, interest and skills in mission and visioning, especially with nonprofit boards in selecting her for the position.
“My background will help FIND carve out an important place in the diocesan vision for adult formation,” Sevick said.
She has served as Executive Director of Our Friend’s Place—The Episcopal Girls’ Home in Dallas and as the initial President of the Board of the Canterbury Episcopal School in DeSoto. In 1989, Sevick became professed member of the Third Order of the Society of Saint Frances and has served several roles within the order, including Area Chaplain, Fellowship Coordinator, and Formation Counselor and has provided spiritual direction to tertiaries at all levels along with planning and leading retreats.
For more than six years, Sevick served as chaplain and social worker for a local hospice and was alternate director, all of which gave her a depth of compassion and knowledge about the spiritual needs of the dying and their families. She also has provided training to clergy on ways to connect with and serve senior populations.
Her role as mentor in Education For Ministry for more than 30 years gave Sevick a grounding in theology, biblical studies, and church history. Sevick attributes much of her own growth in spirituality to her experience as an iconographer.
Sevick has a master’s in social work from The University of Texas at Arlington. She is married to Rev. Gerry Sevick, rector of Trinity-The Woodlands.
