Applications for a Tuition Waiver for Cohort 20 of the BattleGround to Breaking Ground Traditional Program are open!
BattleGround to Breaking Ground (BGBG) is a multi-track training pathway for active-duty military, veterans, their families, and civilians who are new or beginning farmers and ranchers to assist them in starting or enhancing a production agriculture business.
The Traditional, Condensed, or Skills Training Program tracks offers online business planning, production-focused coursework, hands-on mentoring, and in-person workshop options, participants learn to select an enterprise, set goals, manage risk, build a technical assistance team, and develop the financial and operational skills needed to launch or strengthen a sustainable production agriculture business. By the end, learners can create a complete farm or ranch business plan, analyze budgets and financial statements, explore financing options and local resources, and apply real-world skills through mentorship, including planning an agritourism event.
There are also tracks that offer an introduction to agriculture type workshops through the Introduction to Agriculture Business online course and the in-person Introduction to Production Agriculture Boot Camp.
The mission of this program is to increase the number of beginning farmers and ranchers in the U.S. and enhance their enterprise sustainability through an innovative, holistic model for education, training, technical assistance, and outreach; thus, reducing self-employment barriers for veterans and others (particularly those with disabilities) to enter and remain in production agriculture.
One of the unique and innovative aspects of the project is that it addresses not only the educational needs of beginning farmers and ranchers, but also offers a professional learning community that provides ongoing beginning farmer business development and ag-specific technical guidance, access to farm management and production expertise, and potential linkage to land opportunities.
Deadline to apply for a Tuition Waiver is July 31, 2026.
Deadline to pay for Tuition is September 18, 2026.
