Did you know sheep are more than just wool producers? These intelligent, social animals have excellent memories, can recognize both human and sheep faces, and communicate through a variety of vocalizations and body language.

From providing wool, meat, and milk to contributing to sustainable grazing systems, sheep play an important role in agriculture around the world.

🐔 Species Spotlight: Chickens 🐔

Did you know chickens are much more than just egg producers? These intelligent birds can recognize over 100 individual faces, communicate using more than 30 unique vocalizations, and even demonstrate problem-solving skills.

✨ Quick Facts:
🥚 Lifespan: 5–10+ years (depending on breed and care)
🌎 Scientific name: Gallus gallus domesticus
🍽️ Diet: Omnivores that enjoy grains, insects, seeds, and vegetation
🏡 Social animals that thrive in flocks with a clear pecking order

From backyard companions to commercial production, chickens play an essential role in agriculture, food security, and research. Their behavior, health, and welfare continue to be important areas of study in veterinary medicine.

Hi everyone! My name is Olivia, and I’m excited to serve as the 2026–2027 Historian for Block & Bridle!

I’m a junior Animal Science major on the pre-veterinary track. On campus, I’m involved in Pre-Vet Society, Sigma Alpha, Terps Raising Pups, Ski Club and One Health.

I’m looking forward to capturing and sharing all of the memories, events, and accomplishments of our chapter this year. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish together. Here’s to a great year with Block & Bridle! 🐾💚

Congrats to our graduating senior Raven Herron! Raven is graduating with an Animal Science degree on the Pre-Veterinary Track. Some of her favorite memories at UMD and as a part of Block and Bridle include showing on Ag Day, coaching showmen, being a part of the NESA team, and Dystocia Meetings. She will be attending NC State College of Veterinary Medicine and we can’t wait to see where it will take her! Congrats Raven, we wish you the best of luck on this next part of your journey!!

Congrats to our graduating senior Emily Todd!! Emily is on the Animal Science Pre-Professional track, and has been very involved in the animal science department. Some of her favorite memories include being involved in clubs like Block and Bridle, spending time with friends, and being involved with CMREC and Roseda. She plans to take a year off to work at her clinic, work in a research lab on campus, and later attend BCT and AIT to work towards the Army Veterinary Corps once she obtains her DVM! Congrats Emily, we wish you the best of luck on this next part of your journey!
