Meet Kirk Morris, a 2017 Smith Alum who is currently an Account Manager at Facebook! Upon graduating, Kirk knew he wanted to grow his career at a major player in the tech industry and work for an organization that aligned with his values. He chose his position as account manager by aligning his interests and strengths and finding a role that would serve as a foundation for future opportunities. During his time here at Smith, Kirk studied marketing and was involved in multiple organizations including Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, Private Equity and Venture Capital Clinic, UMD Club Running, and Black Business Association. Kirk advises current students to create a foundation for your career by building a range of experiences and skills, and to lean on your friendships and relationships during the transition from college to your career. “You'll find comfort and support throughout your transition by connecting with those who are in the same situation, and those connections will fuel your early success.”
Meet Matthew Wilson, a 2007 Smith Alum! He would advise current Smith students to pick an industry that interests you and has potential for career growth. Hi everyone! We’re Angela and Marguerite and we’re both interning for GE this summer. We’re incredibly excited to be this week’s intern takeover! Angela is a Financial Management Program Intern on the Commercial Finance team for GE Power in Atlanta. Marguerite is a Commercial Leadership Program Intern at GE Healthcare in Milwaukee, working as part of the Enterprise Digital Solutions business under the Global Strategy and Operations Team. Stay tuned to get a glance into our daily lives as interns in different roles at the same company!
#Interntakeover When I was a freshman, I had an answer to "Where do you want to work post-college?" "Google, Facebook, etc."
The question I didn't have an answer to was the follow up: "Why?"
Working at a tech company has lots of perks. The snacks on every floor, the open office culture, the in-office gym, on-site dining halls, coffee bars, and more are all INSANE benefits.
It's really easy to be jaded by all the insane tangible goods any company has. It's also equally, if not more, important to ensure the company's mission, vision, and culture align with your own values and beliefs. LinkedIn's office, beyond making me feel like I'm at Disneyland, have ambitious passions and warm personalities. I love this company because the employees are warm, friendly, hilarious, and ridiculously smart. The ping pong tables and food are nice, but those are all just additional reasons to love it here.
If someone asks you, "Why do you want to work at ______," check to ensure you've done lots of self-reflection and have an authentic answer. Keep smiling :) - @drosenstein #LinkedinLife #InternTakeover #linkedinterns @ Linkedin
#Interntakeover “What the heck does a _______ intern even do?” This is one of my favorite questions to ask my friends after hearing where they interned or their title is.
As a Sales Intern, the projects I’ve worked on vary significantly from the projects my other interns have worked on. For me, my manager has been working tirelessly to fill some vacant positions on her team, and has trusted me to take on this effort! I’ve spent the past week recruiting and interviewing candidates to potentially join our team, and have learned a TREMENDOUS amount in the process.
When I’m not a recruiter, I’m helping my manager with some high-level, strategic projects. Currently, I’ve been in touch with all our team’s top sales people to coordinate interviews to answer the question, “What’s making you so successful?” I’m going to document all these answers and create a “guidebook” for my fellow teammates to propel their own career. I really appreciate having such a team-oriented sales environment (similar to the collaborative nature within Smith!)! Keep on smiling 😊 - @drosenstein #LifeAtLinkedIn #LinkedIntern
Hi everyone! My name’s David, and I’m ecstatic to be this week’s #InternTakeover. I’m a rising Smith senior studying marketing and management. This summer, I’m interning @LinkedIn in San Francisco, (so apologies for the 3 hour time zone difference!). I’m about to start my 3rd week @LinkedIn as a Sales Intern. Stay tuned: this week I’m going to give you a tour of the office, document the meals I eat, pass along some advice I’ve learned, and more. Feel free to DM the account if there’s something specific you’d like me to highlight! Keep smiling :) - @d_rosenstein #LifeAtLinkedIn #LinkedIntern
Happy day before graduation! Today’s #smithhired Senior is Julia Audet: Julia is a Senior Management and Communications double major, who will be working for Meltwater after graduations as a Sales Consultant. As an internal transfer student, Julia found her interest in business through working directly with others, ultimately drawing her to major in Management. While originally interested in pursuing Human Resources, she was redirected toward sales due to the ability to interact with both others within the company and clients. After interning with several companies during her time as a student, she became familiar with the software company through one of her internships that required her to use Meltwater’s products. She found her place among the collaborative, fun-loving environment and her responsibilities will include B2B selling, performing data analytics, and planning press releases.
Julia’s advice to others is to never settle and persevere. When planning for her future, Julia knew she wanted a challenging role that would provide her opportunities to learn and grow. As someone who was actively involved in college through Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Fraternity, a Stamp Student Union Employee, member of the Student Employee Advisory Board, Intern with Hearing Loss Association of North America, Solid Waste Association of North America, and Vectorworks, she wanted to apply the skills she obtained through to a rewarding career. With proven experience, Julia believed in her ability to achieve the right career, and found it within Meltwater.
#smithhired Senior countdown to graduation! 3 days to graduation: Andy Zhang - Andy is a Finance and Computer Science double major, who will be working at Zillow after graduation as a Software Development Engineer. While always passionate about pursuing Computer Science, Andy’s interest in how businesses are structured and investments, led his to pursue business as well. Always interested in technology, what led his to Zillow was the innovation within the company, as the organization is disrupting the traditional real estate market. His key understandings of mortgages and home loans allowed his to stand out to employers, landing him a summer internship with the company that then became a full time position. At Zillow, his responsibilities will include developing new product software for the company’s app.
Andy’s advice to underclassmen is to be confident in your education. As a Teaching Assistant and a member of College Park Scholars: Science, Technology, and Society program, he was able to immerse himself in education and learn the technical skills need in his career. While double majoring, Andy found that being a business student allowed him to develop professionally through networking opportunities and teamwork, making him comfortable in the professional setting. Coupled together, his time at University of Maryland allowed him to become a well-rounded candidate, who demonstrated a passion for learning in a rapidly changing industry, allowing his to stand out to Zillow.
#smithhired senior countdown, 4 days to graduation: Lauren Black - Lauren is a Senior Accounting and Information Systems double major with a minor in professional writing, who will be working as an Audit Associate at KPMG after graduation. After interacting with on-campus recruiters, Lauren became interested in pursuing accounting due to the client-side engagement and opportunities to learn about numerous industries through the work. KPMG in particular interested her due to the shared values and the confidence her recruiter had in her abilities and her dream to work in New York City. She able to accomplish her goal of working in New York, and her responsibilities will include reconciling documents, performing interviews to gather information, and speaking with clients about errors.
Lauren’s advice is to join clubs, but join them for a purpose. Active in a number of organizations, Lauren has been a part of Alpha Kappa Psi, the Dean’s Student Advisory Council, and Co-President of Smith Ambassadors. It was her diverse involvements that made her confident in engaging numerous personality types in interviews, assuring employers that she was prepared and qualified for the positions she interviewed for. These positions also allowed her to determine what she values in her career, which is shaping positive change through organizations like Smith Ambassadors and the Dean’s Student Advisory Council. This ultimately lead her to pursue to her careers that were doing impactful, important work from day one of her job.
#smithhired Senior countdown to graduation: Huw is a Senior Marketing major with a minor in sustainability, who will be working at Adobe after graduation as a Business Analyst. Uncertain what he wanted to major in, Huw took several internships to provide him with insight into possible careers. Whether working at a sustainability lab or doing social media, he found himself fascinated by data, and after acting as Vice President of Marketing for one of his organizations he found his fit within the major. What initially drew him to Adobe was his lifelong interest in technology and ability to be creative. Interning with the company, he was able to experience the collaborative culture at Adobe and how the company invests in employees, which led him accept a full time offer. At Adobe, Huw’s role will require him to analyze and determine areas that the company can improve in for their product division and consulting division.
Huw’s advice for others is to not be afraid to break away from expectations and follow your own path. For Huw, the most rewarding career is one that he is passionate about. Whether leading others as Director of Communications within the Student Government Association or as Co-director of Technica, he was able to gain experience in the technology industry and leadership, which were both lifelong interests of his. Seeing his hard work come to fruition solidified his passion in the field, and this proven experience as a leader and 5 internships while in college made his an outstanding candidate for employers. Ultimately, this allowed Huw to determine that Adobe is the right company for him because it’s where he is happiest.
