We were proud sponsors of the 2026 Associated Press Sports Editors convention this weekend! Thanks for visiting the D.C. area, APSE.
Merrill College student Austin DeSisto served as the photographer, even more of our students volunteered, our alums spoke on panels — and one of our reporting projects won a first-place award in the APSE contest!

Today would've been the 121st birthday of Shirley Povich, the legendary Washington Post sports columnist and our namesake.
Povich's incredible career inspired the creation of The Shirley Povich Center for Sports Journalism 15 years ago. We at the Povich Center and Philip Merrill College of Journalism are proud to honor his remarkable legacy every day by preparing students to be innovators and leaders in all facets of sports media.
Our unique experiential curriculum and programs elevate and amplify discussion of race, gender, politics and the world — just as Povich did each morning in The Post. Happy birthday, Shirley!
