Environmental Science & Policy freshman and Maryland native Esther Bonney has already had some huge moments of triumph.
But perhaps the biggest is starting and directing her own nonprofit, Nurture Natives, which provides residents with ready-to-plant trees and guidebooks for native plantings. The organization was born out of Bonney’s award-winning Maryland 4-H project as a high school student, leading to recognition as a President’s Environmental Youth Award and 4-H Youth In Action winner.

Throughout the 2024 fall semester, environmental science students at the University of Maryland, College Park, worked with NOAA Ocean Exploration staff to review and analyze the efficacy of marine debris policies in four regions.
During their final presentation to NOAA Ocean Exploration and NOAA Marine Debris Program staff, the students shared their findings alongside case studies from each of their four regions of interest. The students also presented their recommendations for future research before having the opportunity to ask some of their own career-related questions of their NOAA mentors.
