Letter to Charlottesville, VA - DMV Lambdas
This weekend in Charlottesville, VA, we witnessed white supremacy, fascism and hatred in its ugliest form. Dozens were hurt and lives were lost. What we witnessed was a culmination of deep-rooted bigotry, which no longer feels the need to hide itself under white sheets or behind closed doors. These…

As a fraternity founded upon social justice for the purpose of defending and uplifting the Latinx community, we hold in high regards those who fight for equality, human rights and the just treatment of our brothers and sisters of color. Unfortunately, this fight comes with a lot of risks. Those who fight for equality and fairness are usually met with harshness and inhumane cruelty. One does not have to look through the history books or read about the Civil Rights Movement to know this. Your own classmates can tell you. Members from PLUMAS (Political Latinxs United for Movement and Action in Society) and United We Dream were physically attacked, insulted and spat on by Donald Trump supporters. Our own Brother Jovani Rubio from Iowa State was harassed and had his sign ripped during a peaceful silent protest. His friend Maria Alcivar was pushed and touched inappropriately during that some peaceful demonstration by Trump supporters. We applaud these fighters for not giving in to hatred. For not lowering themselves to the levels of their hateful, racist attackers. They are the true heroes and heroines. They display true courage. Not Donald Trump, not Shelby Mueller and not any other bigot who attacks already marginalized groups to satisfy their own hate. If any of these peaceful demonstrators would have retaliated, our whole ethnicity would have been instantly demonized by the media. One of our Founding Brothers said "white privilege is being able to do something as vile as pulling a girls hair during a peaceful protest and not have it become a reflection of your entire race or ethnicity." That is a painful truth that people of color live with but one we will continue to fight.
