Sometimes our Scholars don't have to travel far for a great field trip!

Recently, some public_leadership Scholars enjoyed a relaxing trip to nearby Lake Artemesia.

Spread out over early 30 different locations from College Park all the way to Baltimore, this year's freshmen in College Park Scholars ☀️ 🐢 took part in a tradition nearly as old as the program itself - Service Day.

That's right. Just one day after moving to campus and joining us for Scholars Under The Lights where they met the rest of their cohort and their Peer Mentors, our newest Scholars boarded buses 🚍 and vans or trekked across campus 👣 to serve at a variety of locations.

What these awesome stats don't tell you is the true impact of that day in service in our local and surrounding communities.

From helping elementary school teachers 🏫 prepare their classrooms for the upcoming school year, to pulling vegetables that will actually be used in our dining halls 😋, to distributing backpacks 🎒 full of school supplies to immigrant children, to removing invasive weeds 🌿 in water and on land to rescuing historic data 💻 in danger of being erased to salvaging wood 🔨 and sorting donated clothes 👕 and sports equipment ⚾🏉🏀 to prepping meals 🔪... WHEW! Scholars did it all! 🫡

Just a few days after Henson Week at the University of Maryland, check out Thomas Holtz, our resident dino expert and Science and Global Change's program director, sharing about the muppet Gonzo and what kind of animal it could be.

Gonzo’s most distinct feature is also his most baffling: his beak. (Or is it a nose?)
