Student Spotlight
Valery Caicedo (B.S. Civil & Environmental Engineering, senior) discovered her path in transportation through a high-school mentorship with an FHWA researcher.
She has since taken on leadership as president of UMD’s SHPE chapter and a Clark Ambassador (since 2024), while contributing to transportation research on e-bike safety with Professor Cinzia Cirillo. She also broadened her global engineering perspective through ENCE489J, presenting project work in Denmark.

We’re excited to spotlight Kyla Erman, a senior in Civil & Environmental Engineering and Art History, and a dedicated Sustainability minor. Kyla was awarded a prestigious ASHE scholarship and will represent UMD in Denmark’s Grøn Dyst (Green Challenge) competition this summer.
Her project explores using porous asphalt to reduce traffic noise—a vital step toward healthier, more livable urban environments. Kyla emphasizes that while we know transportation systems can enhance accessibility and economic opportunity, they must also address human wellness.
With her interdisciplinary interests in transportation systems, urban planning, and historic preservation, Kyla embodies the future of engineering that is both functional and expressive. We’re incredibly proud of her achievements and can’t wait to see where this journey leads.
