JOIN US: We're hosting a screening of “Bear Me Into Freedom,” a new documentary about the life of Frederick Douglass, at Hoff Theater on Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m.

The film’s producer, Jeff McGuiness, will be in attendance to speak about the film. The screening of the 1-hour film is open to the public. No tickets or registration are required.

A BIG CONGRATULATIONS to Nicole Ramos, a Merrill College master’s student and Howard fellow who was honored by the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights for her reporting about abuses at the House of Reformation for Colored Boys at Cheltenham!

Ramos was awarded a Justice in Action Scholarship from the Civil Rights Commission and was recognized at the group’s annual gala. The scholarship recognizes a high school student and college student from across Maryland “who actively turn civic knowledge into community power.”

Earlier this year, the MDDC Press Association awarded Ramos, a FRONTLINE (PBS) intern, first place for diversity reporting for her work on Cheltenham.

Ramos was a driving force in the investigation of abuses of young Black boys incarcerated at Cheltenham. The project, led by Associate Professor Rob Wells, documented 243 deaths of boys who attended the facility from 1860 through 1942, a rate nine times that of an all-white boys detention facility in Baltimore County.
