Quest Honors Program at the University of Maryland

Quest Honors Program at the University of Maryland QUEST is a three-year honors program at UMD focused on experiential learning through multidisciplinary, team-based, and hands-on projects.

Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams (QUEST) is a multidisciplinary, hands-on program for University of Maryland undergraduates from three participating schools: The Robert H. Smith School of Business, The A. James Clark School of Engineering, and The College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences. Students follow a series of five courses during the three year program and participate in co-curricular learning and community events each semester. In each QUEST course, students work in cross-functional teams on real world projects. Current freshmen who are enrolled in the Robert H. Smith School of Business, A. James Clark School of Engineering, or College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences are invited to apply to become a part of QUEST. Applications are open each December!

This week marks 28 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027! Throughout our 35th year, we'll be highlighting some incredible QUEST alumni and the many ways they contribute to our community.

This week, we're spotlighting Luxi Kanazir, a Cohort 17 QUEST alumna whose involvement with UMD and QUEST has continued long after graduation. Today, Luxi is a Senior Product Manager at LinkedIn and continues to support the QUEST community by hosting QUEST students for site visits during their trips to Silicon Valley. She provides mentorship to students and early-career professionals interested in Product Management. Luxi has also given back through the Luxi Kanazir Current-Use Scholarship in Engineering, helping support the next generation of QUEST and engineering students.

Luxi's continued involvement is a great example of the lasting connections that make the QUEST community so special. From providing mentorship for current students to investing in their education, she continues to find meaningful ways to give back to the program.

This week marks 29 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027! It's also the week of our 12th Annual Fall Networking Event, hosted by QUEST Corporate.

QUEST Corporate was started in 2015 by Ilan Gold (Cohort 22) and Andrea Kyeremeh (Cohort 22) to build, manage, and maintain the program’s corporate partner relationships. It bridges the gap between the program’s corporate partners and students by providing exclusive career building opportunities that no other program on campus can provide.

Annually, QUEST Corporate hosts a unique networking event that places students, recruiters, and QUEST alumni in a casual atmosphere that encourages genuine conversations and often leads students to finding internships and jobs. QUEST Corporate also hosts other events such as resume reviews and site visits throughout the school year.

This week marks 30 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027! This week, we're taking a look at the history of QUEST's study abroad programs 🌎✈️

Since 2010, QUEST has hosted 12 study abroad trips over winter break, giving students the opportunity to experience different cultures, explore global industries, and learn about quality and innovation around the world. Over the years, QUEST students have traveled to Japan, Korea, Tunisia, China, Spain, Brazil, Vietnam, Singapore, and more!

This winter, QUEST is returning to Japan! From January 10th-20th, QUEST students will explore Tokyo, Nagoya, and Kyoto, combining cultural experiences with visits to companies to learn about Japan's approach to innovation and technology. Applications are open through September 30 at go.umd.edu/questtojapan

This week marks 31 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027! This week, we're looking back on the history of the QUEST curriculum.

When QUEST was first established in 1992, the program was designed around a four-course sequence focused on total quality. The original curriculum included Introduction to Engineering Design and Quality, Quality Strategy: A Global Perspective, The Measurement of Quality, and a Total Quality Practicum, which was an internship where students worked on real-world quality improvement projects.

Over the past 35 years, the QUEST curriculum has evolved alongside the needs of students, organizations, and the changing world of work. Today, QUEST students still complete four core courses focused on design and quality, systems thinking, process improvement, and experiential learning, along with a QUEST elective. Students continue to work in multidisciplinary teams solving meaningful challenges for real organizations.

From the original IBM-TQ curriculum to today's QUEST courses, the program's commitment to hands-on, multidisciplinary learning has remained at the heart of the experience.

This week marks 32 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027! It's also the first week back at school for the Fall 2026 semester. We'll be teaching our QUEST classes this year in TERP classrooms which are special round-table rooms meant for teamwork and collaboration.

Did you know that the first QUEST classes were taught in the IBM-TQ Teaching Theater? Built in 1993, the innovative design was U-shaped to encourage collaboration and discussion. It also was one of the first rooms to have computers and internet connection at each desk. It also had video cameras and microphones for taping class sessions. The goal was that the classroom would simulate the use of technology in the new corporate workplace.

Today, the IBM-TQ signs still adorn the walls but the technology has gotten a bit of an upgrade!

This week marks 33 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027. And tomorrow, we'll be hosting our 47th QUEST Orientation for Cohort 47!

Did you know that Orientation has been a tradition for QUEST students since Cohort 1 in 1992? From Cohorts 1 through 20, QUEST Orientation was held at Camp Horizons in Harrisonburg, VA. Orientation then switched to Camp Letts in Edgewater, MD. Beginning with Cohort 30, odd-numbered cohorts attended a summer orientation while even-numbered cohorts attended a winter orientation. Today's orientations take place at Sandy Hill (summer) and Camp Tockwogh (winter).

Our orientation tradition gives students an immediate opportunity to bond in a new setting and tackle a set of challenges together, building strong relationships that carry through the program.

This week marks 34 weeks until QUEST's 35th Anniversary Events in April 2027. Did you know that QUEST was originally called the IBM-TQ (Total Quality Program), started in 1992 to teach the principles of total quality to business and engineering students at UMD? UMD was one of eight schools to receive a $1 million grant from IBM, and from what we know, QUEST is the only program that remains today from the original grant.
