As graduation approaches, Jess ’26 is reflecting on the moments that shaped her college experience — especially her semester abroad in Copenhagen. 📸🌍

From finding confidence in unfamiliar places to building community and rediscovering her creativity, her experience continues to shape how she sees the world.

“Now, as I prepare to graduate from UMD, I find myself returning to my semester abroad more than I expected. Not just as a collection of memories, but as a set of moments that shaped how I see the world and my work.”

As an aspiring photojournalist, Jess took thousands of photos of her time abroad. They captured moments that defined her study abroad and lessons that she will carry with her long past graduation.

As a double major in Gemstone, Amelia didn’t think studying abroad would fit into her schedule — until she found a program that did. In Iceland, she explored renewable energy, met fellow engineers and learned how to stay grounded (even in freezing winds) by shifting her perspective.

Starting early gives you more flexibility and a lot less stress later.

Rolling admissions means your application is reviewed as soon as it's submitted. Apply now, hear back sooner, and spend the summer actually preparing for your semester abroad — sorting out academics, finances, housing, and your visa — instead of juggling all of it during the busiest weeks of the fall.

This year, Maryland-in programs, affiliate programs, and other approved programs use rolling admissions. Maryland-led and partner university programs still have a final deadline — check your program page for details.

Education Abroad scholarships are reviewed in cycles based on when you apply. Over $850,000 is available each year — and applying earlier means you’ll hear back sooner. Apply by August 16 to be included in the first scholarship review on August 26 — after that, applications are reviewed every two weeks.

When Mia Owens was 8 years old, she found a box of postcards in her grandparents' closet — and spotted her dad as a teenager standing in front of the Acropolis of Athens. That was the moment she decided: one day, she would study abroad too. 🇬🇷

Ten years later, she was standing right where that photo was taken.

Through UMD's summer program in Greece — Exploring the Mediterranean Diet and Its Impact on Health — Mia spent two weeks immersed in a country she'd dreamed about since childhood. She visited farms in Corinth, heard stories of resilience from local growers, wandered gift shops near the Acropolis and said yes to the unexpected (and slightly terrifying 😅) adventures.

By her own admission, Mia is a type-A, routine-loving, automatic "no" kind of person. Greece changed that.

"It only takes one yes to have a life-changing experience. My yes led me back to the country I discovered from snooping in a box."
