The University of Maryland aspires to become one of the most globally connected universities in the world, and the Office of International Affairs (OIA) plays a leading role in realizing this ambition. OIA is in charge of coordinating international activities within the university’s seven colleges and five schools, advancing a strategic plan for internationalization, fostering and nurturing international partnerships, as well as developing innovative programming for faculty and students that will facilitate their development as global leaders committed to the improvement of the common good. The University of Maryland has more than 170 active partnerships across the globe. It sends more than 2,000 students abroad each year on a variety of programs that focus on global competence and professional development. And, it welcomes more than 4,500 international students and 1,500 international scholars to College Park each year. Social Media Comment Policy

More ways to fund your study abroad in 2027.

Education Abroad plans to award nearly $1 million in scholarships to students studying abroad in 2027, with new opportunities and increased award amounts designed to make study abroad more accessible.

Here’s what’s new:
💰 First Abroad Scholarship: Eligible first-generation undergraduate students studying abroad for the first time can receive $1,000 for short-term programs or $2,000 for semester programs. The First Abroad Scholarship can be combined with other Education Abroad scholarships, including the Gilman Guarantee.
📈 Increased Education Abroad Departmental Fund awards: Undergraduate students can be considered for $500–$2,500 for short-term programs and $500–$4,000 for semester programs, with financial need remaining the primary consideration.
🎓 Graduate Student Travel Grant: Beginning Winter 2027, graduate students participating in Maryland-led short-term programs can apply for a new $1,000 travel grant.

These new and expanded opportunities build on existing Education Abroad funding, including the Gilman Guarantee and exchange waivers.

Education Abroad scholarships are also now awarded on a rolling basis, helping students receive funding information earlier as they plan for study abroad.

Planning ahead? Many Education Abroad scholarships require students to have a FAFSA on file for the applicable academic year. Filing your FAFSA early is an important step toward ensuring you can be considered for all funding opportunities for which you may be eligible.

Visiting the birthplace of America! 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Our visiting Fulbright Germany students spent Saturday in Philly as part of their four-week Discover the USA program at UMD. They stepped inside Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and adopted, saw the Liberty Bell and rounded out the day at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Excursions like these take learning beyond the classroom, giving students the opportunity to explore American history and culture in the places that shaped them. 🔔

Application Deadline Extended 🚨🇪🇸

Maryland-in-Barcelona applications have been extended until 9/13.

Global Learning Initiatives is welcoming 24 German Fulbright students to UMD for Discover the USA, a four-week program sponsored by the German-American Fulbright Commission exploring American culture, society and community. Through classes with UMD faculty, visits throughout Maryland and the region, community engagement and plenty of opportunities to connect with Terps, participants will explore themes of cultural awareness, global readiness, leadership and community impact.

We asked them what they’re most curious to discover at Maryland Global’s welcome reception this week. Now, four weeks of learning, exploring and connecting are underway.

🌍🎓 This graduation season, our UMD community came together to celebrate international Terps through the “Cheer on a Terp” initiative.

For students whose loved ones could not be at commencement in person, members of the Maryland Global team and broader UMD community stepped in to cheer them on, celebrate their achievements, and help make the day feel special. From snapping photos as grads crossed the stage to celebratory meals, these moments reflected the care and connection that define our community.

As graduation approaches, Jess ’26 is reflecting on the moments that shaped her college experience — especially her semester abroad in Copenhagen. 📸🌍

From finding confidence in unfamiliar places to building community and rediscovering her creativity, her experience continues to shape how she sees the world.

“Now, as I prepare to graduate from UMD, I find myself returning to my semester abroad more than I expected. Not just as a collection of memories, but as a set of moments that shaped how I see the world and my work.”

“This study abroad allowed me to get technical elective credit, while also traveling to a new place and meeting amazing people.”

As a double major in Gemstone, Amelia didn’t think studying abroad would fit into her schedule — until she found a program that did. In Iceland, she explored renewable energy, met fellow engineers and learned how to stay grounded (even in freezing winds) by shifting her perspective.

Whether your schedule is packed or your major feels demanding, study abroad can still be part of your plan.

Starting early gives you more flexibility and a lot less stress later.

Rolling admissions means your application is reviewed as soon as it's submitted. Apply now, hear back sooner, and spend the summer actually preparing for your semester abroad — sorting out academics, finances, housing, and your visa — instead of juggling all of it during the busiest weeks of the fall.

This year, Maryland-in programs, affiliate programs, and other approved programs use rolling admissions. Maryland-led and partner university programs still have a final deadline — check your program page for details.

Education Abroad scholarships are reviewed in cycles based on when you apply. Over $850,000 is available each year — and applying earlier means you’ll hear back sooner. Apply by August 16 to be included in the first scholarship review on August 26 — after that, applications are reviewed every two weeks.
