“We will never forget.” To mark the 25th year of 9/11, Haldane High School Social Studies teacher Jackie McGrath worked tirelessly to coordinate an extraordinary learning opportunity for our high school students. Mrs. McGrath invited Captain Rick Thorton of the NYC waterway to share his powerful and inspiring story of 9/11. He was one of the 800 mariners that day who helped evacuate lower Manhattan, saving an estimated 500,000 lives. The HFA is incredibly proud of Mrs. McGrath for bringing this meaningful experience to our students so they can learn firsthand about courage, valor, and selflessness.

Today, the Haldane Community and members of the Putnam County Community, gathered to memorialize and remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001. Haldane High School Principal Julia Sniffen welcomed students to the microphone to share testimonials of survivors, say the names of Putnam County residents who have fallen, and share thoughts about how 9/11 has shaped lives today. Sam Sauer, music teacher, sang the National Anthem at ceremony and Jessica Stein, band teacher, played “Taps” on the trumpet.

Today, we celebrate the retirements of Kathy Battersby, Lee Posniack, Alison Martin, Marsha Friedwald, and Barbara Powlis.

Congratulations to the Haldane Faculty Association members that received tenure at last night’s board meeting: Kaitlyn Secor, Christina Goehl, Chris Blair, and Sam Sauer. Ashley Cortes (not pictured) received her tenure in February of this year.

Haldane educators continue to celebrate National Poetry month in their classes.

HFA member and high school art teacher, Alison Booth, had her students in Ceramics/Sculpture do a creative writing/narrative sculpture project; some students wrote poems to accompany their sculptures.

Library/media teacher and HFA member, Terri Sous, had her students take photocopies of pages from books, black out words leaving poetry behind.

The Haldane Crochet Club participated in the community Knit-a-thon for food. The club collected over three boxes of food for the Philipstown Food Pantry. Members of the club spent a morning session knitting and crocheting with community members at the Endless Skein in Cold Spring. This is the second year the club has participated, led by high school history teacher Michelle Cordaro.
