Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium The Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery & Aquarium is a nonprofit environmental education center, working trout hatchery, and aquarium.

After 99 years as a New York State trout hatchery, we opened as a non-profit educational center dedicated to educating our visitors about the freshwater ecosystems of New York. We are proud to have the largest living collection of New York State freshwater reptiles, fishes and amphibians. Visitors can tour our two aquarium buildings and eight outdoor ponds, feed the hungry trout, and try our “Catch & Keep” fishing.

The Fowler’s toad is the only true toad that lives on Long Island. So what exactly makes up a “true toad”?

These little amphibians have a few main distinctions from frogs. They completely lack teeth, they lay their eggs in strings instead of clumps, and they have large toxic glands behind their eyes. These toxic glands, called parotoid glands, house a
concentration of bufotoxin that aids the toad in deterring predators.

Red-bellied turtle young and adults look like completely different species. Juveniles have a highly contrasting pattern on their carapace (top shell) and skin, while adults' carapace and skin are almost completely black.

They can easily be mistaken for painted turtles. Redbelly turtles lack a yellow patch behind the eye, whereas painted turtles will have this yellow patch.

Despite its warty skin that usually marks a toad, this amphibian is still a frog. In fact, it’s New York’s only true treefrog! The gray treefrog belongs to a family of frogs called Hylidae, the true treefrogs.

One of the key characteristics of true treefrogs is not actually living in trees (some prefer lower vegetation) and not even the sticky toes. The key characteristic is the bones within the toes. They have extra bone or cartilage that act like small claws to help them climb better.
