Can we go deep in Abdominal Massage?
Yes, with patience, connection, and consent. Not just verbal consent from the client, but consent from every layer saying a subtle YES by gently softening.
I have seen far too many people come to me after receiving abdominal work with someone without proper training, feeling injured, invaded.
I have felt this myself, too. With well meaning (and advanced!) practitioners of massage and one time a chiropractor. I trusted them.
One example was that I saw a massage therapist who had extra training in postpartum bodywork. I assumed that meant abdominal work and asked about that. Looking back, I could see something in her eyes and mannerisms that showed that abdominal work wasn’t really covered in what she learned.
She said, yes, she could do some abdominal work.
Well…it was painful, and I was worried for the next week that I had allowed her to injure me.
Was it deep? I don’t know. maybe not for you. But it was too deep for me at that time. And that’s the point. She wasn’t listening to these tissues that had just gone through so much. Just relying on what she had learned on the rest of the body.
As a massage therapist and teacher of Abdominal Massage, pressure is something that I focus A LOT on in my practice and in my trainings. And here is what i focus on: right pressure. It’s not about going to a certain depth or being more surficial. It’s about connecting to a depth that can vary from person to person and from centimeter to centimeter of their body, and especially the abdominal region.
If this approach resonates with you, 👋 welcome! I teach abdominal massage online and in person and would love to be a part of your educational journey.
The next in person intensive begins Sept 14 in Burlington, Vt Vermont Doula Company. There is still time to register.
