In September 2019, the Work Project was performed at the Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill. It was an exhibit and performance comprised of portraits of workers and dramatic readings of their oral histories related to how they feel about their work. The purpose of the project was to contrast workers' experiences in the context of their union status. It was inspired by "Working" by Studs Turkel and stories I've heard including the exerpts below. In the following posts are a sample of portraits and brief quotes from their stories. We are so grateful to Betty and Ken who brought the oral histories to life.

We are proposing to expand this project to include workers' stories in the context of the pandemic. Wish us luck for our grant proposal.

Mark’s Story
Yea I work hard and enjoy what I do. I’m lucky I have seniority so when work is slow in the winter I’m the third person they call so I’m always busy. I’m in TEAMSTERS 282. Wow, been with my local 15 years. It’s more than a paycheck. I mean, you get so much more (with the union). Benefits, scholarships, safety classes…I wouldn’t be able to retire without it. We have 5,000 members. I don’t like paying the dues but you get so much. I just took a crane driving class. The union paid for it. It would have been $400. I did better than my supervisor (laughs). I don’t know why people wouldn’t want to pay their dues. Without the dues you just get a paycheck. The unions would come apart. I’m getting free life insurance next week.

A brief story from Pete
One non-union worker relayed his story; "After days of double shifts I was exhausted and driving the truck wouldn't be safe. He (his boss) just wouldn't take no for an answer. He asked me why I couldn't drive the truck for him. I told him 'cause I don't work here anymore." This man was pushed to the point that he left without any back-up plan to support his disabled wife.

“Candice, Discount Store Staff Member”, oil on canvas: “My store manager… if he didn't give me a chance, I wouldn't be here, working at the dollar store. He took a chance on me. I pretty much told him I’d been a stay at home mom for 7... 8 years. I just needed to do something else, even if it was just part time. He took a chance on me and I’m still here.”

“Desiree, Teacher”, oil on canvas: “you want them to love the task, to be excited about the task…That’s where our prep time, which is in our contract, is so valuable because it’s not just about grading, it’s about creating… and keeping the kids enthused.”

“Ray, Fiber Optic Technician”, pastel: “I like to help people out. I don't want to be the one telling you what you're doing wrong I want to be the one telling you what you need to do to get it right. I'm not going to come at you trying to cut your head off. I'm going to come at you with the band-aid to cover your neck.”
