On this day 93 years ago, North Idaho College held its first day of classes.

On Sept. 18, 1933, Coeur d’Alene Junior College opened with 55 students. With no campus of its own, classes were held on the third floor of Coeur d'Alene, City Hall.

Pictured here circa 1933, City Hall was the college’s first home. Its third floor had been converted into five classrooms, an auditorium and a laboratory for students.

Within just a few days, enrollment had grown to 74 students! The college remained at City Hall until land was secured for the campus where NIC sits today.

Constitution Day marks the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. As part of the nationwide America250 commemoration, North Idaho College is hosting two events that invite our community to explore our nation’s history and join the conversation about its future.

Next week, the community is invited to join us for two free events:

• The Longest Table: Conversations for the Next 250 – Share a meal with members of the community, reflect on where we are today and join a conversation about hopes for the next 250 years. Space is limited to 250 guests, and an RSVP is required to attend.
• Encounter History: James Madison Brought to Life – Storyteller and author Bryan Austin will portray James Madison in a live performance exploring the people, ideas and debates that helped shape the Constitution and the nation’s government.

Both events are part of NIC’s recognition of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and an opportunity to reflect on our shared history while looking ahead to the future.

Heads up, campus! Starting Wednesday, Sept. 16, through Thursday, Sept. 17, Rosenberry Drive will be closed for tree work and striping by the City of Coeur d'Alene,.

The NIC Beach will remain open, but vehicle access will not be available during the closure.

Tomorrow, NIC welcomes award-winning poet and author Maya Jewell Zeller to campus for a visiting author event.

Zeller is the author of several books of poetry, nonfiction and writing craft, including her memoir “Raised by Ferns.” She is also a professor of English at Central Washington University.

Hear from Zeller from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the NIC Writing Center, 485 N. College Drive in Coeur d’Alene.

The event is free and open to the public.

Not sure how to make new friends on campus? NIC Student Health and Wellness is making it a little easier!

Stop by Speed Friending from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, in Driftwood Bay of the Student Union Building. Students can meet new people through fun, low-pressure conversation prompts, along with mindfulness and anxiety-reducing activities designed to take some of the stress out of making new connections.

The event is open to all NIC students. Come as you are and leave a little more connected!

The North Idaho College Theatre Department and the University of Idaho are teaming up to bring “Every Brilliant Thing” to the Schuler Performing Arts Center for the first time.

The play takes on serious topics like depression and mental health through a story that is also funny, hopeful and deeply human.

Performances are Sept. 17 and 18 at 7 p.m., and admission is free. See the post below for details and ticket information.
