Whether by boat, by plane, by car, by scooter, by bus, or by foot — we want all of our students to arrive at Cody Middle School safely each morning and return home safely each evening!
We’ve noticed our students use many different modes of transportation to get to and from school. To keep everyone safe, CMS has been collaborating with the Cody Police Department to make sure our students and families remain educated about the importance of traffic regulations and local alternative transportation rules.
Cody PD and CMS wanted to share a friendly reminder regarding local guidelines for bicycles, e-bikes, scooters, and motorized vehicles:
- E-Bike Definitions (Classes 1, 2, & 3): To be considered a legal e-bike, the motor must be under 750 Watts with operable pedals. Class 1 & 2 e-bikes cap assistance at 20 mph, while Class 3 caps at 28 mph.
- Electric Dirt Bikes & Non-Compliant "Bikes": Electric dirt bikes over 750 Watts (even with pedals) or vehicles exceeding state e-bike criteria are considered off-road vehicles or electric motorcycles. These are not legal for use on public city streets or sidewalks unless properly registered and licensed.
- Rules of the Road: E-bike and scooter riders must follow the same traffic laws as standard bicycles and motor vehicles. This includes obeying traffic control devices, riding on the right side of the roadway, and yielding the right of way to pedestrians.
- Safety First: Always wear a helmet, and use headlights and tail lights when riding after dark.
Let’s all do our part to keep our school zones, sidewalks, and streets safe for every student. If you have any questions regarding bicycle, e-bike, or scooter safety guidelines, please reach out to the Cody Police Department at 307-527-8700!
