•••ARTIST STATEMENT••• “I can recall looking out the window on a car ride with my family and countless times, I would watch the graffiti on the train cars pass by for the whole trip. I thought of them as postcards from the city. It was fascinating to think about all the different people who worked on one train and how they collaborated to create that scene. It’s liberating to be able to capture that feeling with my camera years later in locations like New York, Chicago, Miami, and now Cody. What I’ve learned from this expedition is that you can not just take a picture of someone's street art and call it your own. When I see graffiti that I appreciate, I ask myself, “what can I add to this creative work? How can I show my audience how I perceive this graffiti in my own way?” I then observe the scene surrounding it and think about how I can use it to create the composition for the shot. I love to use abstract angles and build on that with elements of photography like leading lines, contrasting colors, shape, and texture. When I shot in bigger cities, I used my rural origin to my advantage because I wasn’t used to seeing graffiti vastly covering the environment I was in. I saw it in a whole new light. Adding Cody to my photo collection of street art provides an appropriate contrast to those urban surroundings and still represents my background and who I am as a person.”

“I’ve found that certain lights create atmospheres that illustrate a specific mood to viewers. In addition, the contrast in light and dark serve as a tool to direct a viewer’s gaze to help emphasize a subject, and to help capture in depth textures of different surfaces. My photography series actively demonstrates these elements that enhance the configuration of my photos.” -Mikala Stahl
