Our Atelier was inspired by the book Clay: Techniques, Experiences and Imaginaries, inviting the children into a world of exploration, experimentation, and discovery. With our Atelierista guiding their investigations, the children became scientists and researchers. The Atelier transformed into a laboratory for preparation and experimentation, where their curiosity encouraged them to explore the many transformations of clay. With great engagement and curiosity, the children experimented with breaking clay into smaller and smaller fragments, observing how it changed as they continued to manipulate it. They explored soft clay, dried clay, broken pieces of different sizes, and eventually reduced the clay to a fine powder. Through this process, they discovered that clay can change, break apart, soften, crumble, and transform. They observed how different materials and gestures created new marks, textures, and possibilities.
Every gesture left a trace. Every transformation became part of their research. The clay held the memory of their hands, their tools, and their ideas as the children continued to question, investigate, and discover.
The Atelier became more than a place to create, it became a laboratory where children could wonder, experiment, and construct their own understandings of the material.
