Starting my summer reading with Neurodiversity Affirming Schools and I’m already excited to dig into it.

One of the things I love most about education is that there is always more to learn. The more we understand how different brains experience the world, the better we can create environments where students feel supported, capable, and understood.

My goal has never been to help children fit into a system. It has always been to help create systems that work better for children.

For my educators, parents, and therapists: What is one thing you wish more people understood about neurodivergent students?

Why do we teach lowercase letters first?

Because lowercase letters do most of the heavy lifting in reading and writing!

About 95% of the letters children encounter in books, stories, and everyday print are lowercase. By learning these letters first, students can begin recognizing words and reading meaningful text much sooner.

Lowercase letters also have more distinct shapes than uppercase letters. Think about the difference between b, d, p, and q. Learning these unique forms helps children develop stronger letter recognition skills, which supports both reading and spelling.

Uppercase letters certainly have their place—we teach them too! But starting with lowercase letters gives students the tools they need to read and write the words they’ll see most often.

It’s one of the many ways structured literacy instruction follows the science of how children learn to read.
