SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech hosted 17 agriculture educators from ten states in July for the Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) Institute’s course in Agricultural Equipment Maintenance & Technology (AEMT). The College has hosted this program multiple times on campus since the summer of 2023 🚜

During the five-day in-person training, participants learned the CASE AEMT curriculum, which they will now implement in their own classrooms. Participants in the program learn in the same lab spaces used by students in the College’s Agricultural Engineering programs 🔧

Ducks Unlimited Student Chapter Earns National Bronze All-American Award at National Summit

SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech’s Student Chapter of Ducks Unlimited was recognized on the national stage in July as a Bronze All-American Collegiate Chapter, one of dozens of chapters honored at Ducks Unlimited’s Third Term Collegiate Leadership Summit in Memphis, Tennessee. This year’s Summit was the largest Third Term event in the program’s history, drawing 350 students representing 109 collegiate chapters, including one chapter from Canada.

“The Ducks Unlimited Third Term Conference was such a fantastic experience. It gave me the chance to network with other collegiate chapters and pick up new ideas for improving not just our chapter, but the organization as a whole,” said Stephanie Bernard (Hamilton, N.Y.), Chapter President and Chair. “DU also opens up so many doors for future careers. I got to talk with current employees about job opportunities and potential collaborations within the organization. Honestly, I think Ducks Unlimited is one of the most influential and impactful organizations out there, for college students and beyond.”

No two days look the same for Kenzie Casey, a rising senior in the Wildlife Management B.T. program who also earned an A.A.S. in Fisheries & Wildlife Technology 🌿

This summer, Kenzie has been working as a Stewardship Intern at The Nature Conservancy's Silver Creek Preserve in Picabo, Idaho. Her work ranges from stream studies and invasive w**d management to property maintenance, leading educational programs, and collaborating with organizations including Idaho Fish and Game, the University of Idaho, the University of Montana, and teams from other Nature Conservancy preserves.

Kenzie says the variety of experiences has been the most rewarding part of the internship. Every day brings a new challenge and the opportunity to build practical field skills while learning more about western ecosystems and wildlife.

Cassidy Kellogg, a Plant Sciences student in the Class of 2027, spent six months studying abroad at HAS green academy in ’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands. 🌱

During their time abroad, Cassidy explored new approaches to plant science while experiencing different cultures and learning from growers and industry professionals around the world. "The opportunity to gain hands-on experience in biological sciences inspired me to continue learning beyond traditional methods and keep exploring new ways to innovate within the field." 🔬

While studying abroad came with challenges, Cassidy says, “living in the Netherlands for six months was an unforgettable experience that expanded both my education and perspective on the global agriculture industry.”🌳

By his own admission, Darius Swift struggled in high school. His acceptance to SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech, however, was a life-changer. After earning his AAS in Computer Information Systems from Cobleskill in December 2024, Darius transferred to the University at Albany, where he recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor's in Digital Forensics. He's now pursuing a Master's in Digital Forensics & Cybersecurity at UAlbany's Massry School of Business.

What makes Darius' story even more meaningful is the mentor who helped guide it: a fellow Cobleskill alum who recognized his potential. During his final semester at UAlbany, Darius completed an internship at Cloud and Things, a state and local government IT consulting firm in Albany, under John Norton, a veteran in the field who earned his AAS in Business & Computer Technology from Cobleskill Ag & Tech in 1984.

In a LinkedIn exchange, John reflected on watching Darius grow: "You wanted to learn and weren't afraid to ask hard questions. That's the foundation for everything that comes next. Proud of you, fellow Cobleskill alum."

In thanking his mentors, Darius offered advice for students who may be doubting themselves: "There may be times when you feel stagnant, but let my story remind you to never count yourself out."

Congratulations, Darius, on earning your Bachelor's and on all you will achieve as you continue your academic journey.

The SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) students lent a helping hand at our local fairgrounds to help prepare the for the 150th annual Schoharie County Sunshine Fair which begins next week! 🌞

The EOP summer bridge program provides students with the opportunity to prepare for college by arriving to campus early while also being able to make an impact in our local community.

Iain Patterson, a Plant Science B.T. student here at SUNY Cobleskill Ag & Tech, is spending the summer as a Crew Member with Landganics Organic W**d Control in Driggs, Idaho, serving properties throughout the Teton Valley. 🌱

Each day, Iain travels to client properties to remove or treat invasive w**ds through hand pulling, seeding, or spraying before moving on to the next site. The work also includes preparing equipment and supplies for the following day to keep operations running efficiently.

He says his favorite part of the internship is working in a region that places a strong emphasis on conservation and having the opportunity to help restore native plant communities.
