For the past six weeks, three active Dairy Cattle Club members, Cait O'Sullivan, Elsie Donlick, and Elizabeth Schieferstine participated in the U.S. Dairy Education & Training Consortium in Clovis, New Mexico.
During the program, they toured dairies across New Mexico and West Texas while learning from professors representing various universities, as well as some of the most knowledgeable industry professionals from across the country. Topics covered through the program were:
- Herd overview and dynamics
-Finance
-Nutrition
-Reproduction
-New technologies and the future of the dairy industry
-Labor management
-Safety and compliance
-Calf and youngstock management
In addition to expanding their knowledge, these girls had the opportunity to connect with 64 other participating students, building lifelong friendships and professional connections with others who share a passion for the dairy industry and represent its future.
Throughout the program, students were given quizzes, and exams. Elsie was recognized as the Top Academic Individual Student for Session 2.
And finally, to apply everything learned through the 6 weeks, along with critical thinking. All students were divided into teams of 4 to partake in a dairy consulting challenge. Where they evaluated a dairy, made a presentation and presented in front of a panel of judges. Elizabeth’s team was awarded 2nd place!
