🌱 Meet a Grow-A-Row Gardener — Alicia Watson! 🌱

Alicia has tinkered with gardening in the past, but this year she decided to go all out—and started a brand-new vegetable garden with her two boys. And WOW, has it been flourishing! 🥕🍅🥒

Not only has Alicia been able to provide fresh produce for her family, neighbors, and friends, but she’s also been sharing her extra harvest with a local food pantry in Middleburgh. ❤️

That’s what Grow-A-Row is all about: growing a little extra and sharing it with those in our community who can use it.

Yesterday we received our first gift of wonderful locally grown food, as part of Cornell Cooperative Extension's "Grow a Row" program. This new program asks local folks who have a home garden to "grow a row" to donate to local food pantries...what a wonderful idea! Our first delivery came from Ann Kelchlin, and included cilantro, rhubarb, Swiss Chard, oregano, garlic scapes and mint. These will be offered to our food pantry guests today to provide some delicious fresh flavor to their food.

We thank Ann, and the good folks at CCE for including us in this program!

🌿 Help Protect Our Waterways During New York Invasive Species Awareness Week! 🌿

Join CRISP, the Otsego County Conservation Association (OCCA), and the Capital Region PRISM on June 13th from 10:00 AM–1:00 PM for a volunteer event focused on removing invasive European frogbit from local waterways.

European frogbit forms dense floating mats that block sunlight, reduce oxygen levels, and negatively impact native aquatic plants and wildlife. By helping remove this invasive species, you'll make a direct difference in protecting healthy aquatic habitats.

It is New York State Invasive Species Awareness Week! Invasive species are non-native species that can cause harm to the environment, the economy or human health.

Here are a few ways you can help protect NY from invasive species this week and all year long:

👉 When getting outside, remember to check your clothing, gear, and pets for any seeds or plant pieces that you could be moving. Scrape your boots and brush off seeds before and after your adventure.

👉 Follow the NYS firewood regulation by using heat-treated firewood, or by buying firewood where you plan to burn it.

👉 Report invasive species you find by using the NY iMapInvasives app. Created via the New York Natural Heritage Program, the app has recently grown to include collaboration with Cornell Integrated Pest Management.

👉 Find your local PRISM, follow them on social media, and subscribe to their listserv to stay up to date with local invasive species news and events.

👉 Sign up for our monthly DEC invasive species newsletter for statewide stories as well as learning and volunteer opportunities.

Thank you to the Cobleskill United Methodist Church Food pantry for serving so many families in our area! They are also a participating food pantry for Grow a Row gardeners. They’ve already received their first local fresh produce from a gardener - rhubarb!
