Check out these sweet moves!
Burying beetles, like this Nicrophorus tomentosus, move carcasses by lying on their backs and using their legs to shuffle the carcass along. It appears to be pretty effective!

Expanding our research this season meant growing our team! Rylee was here when we needed help the most. From birds to beetles to small mammals!

"Hello, my name is Rylee Fancher, and I am entering my Senior year in the Environmental Management 4-year program at SUNY Cobleskill. I am originally from the Cobleskill area as well. I enjoy bird watching, getting outside for walks/runs, and spending time on the water kayaking and fishing. Apart from my research in Hartwick with ABB, this summer I spent my time traveling out west to 9 national parks. As well as completing an independent research project on water quality parameters in Cobleskill Creek for my capstone class."

It's not field season without the annual meeting (and BBQ) at Greenwoods Conservancy! Over the weekend our team took part in conversations about the past, present, and future of the Conservancy, conservation management strategies, the ABB project, encounters with rattlesnakes, crickets that hang with ants, and why planting trees with pants on can have its advantages 😆

"My name is Eva Sgambettera, I am a senior at SUNY Cobleskill working towards a bachelor's degree in environmental management. I have an associate's degree from HVCC in environmental science. I live in Upstate NY where I enjoy bird watching, running, reading, and looking for insects. Apart from working on the ABB project this summer, I have been working on my individual senior research project on habitat partitioning of burying beetle species as well as community composition of forest habitats."

Great to be back at the Huyck Preserve today!
Our own John Pipino spent the day with the high school Wildlife Ecology Students (part of a summer education program at the Huyck) discussing all things burying beetle!
Students engaged in conversation surrounding ABB conservation, beetle behavior, and what it takes to become a biologist!
The rest of the day was spent on the trails, checking beetle traps and sharing thoughts on habitat preference, species diversity, and burying beetle emergence patterns before they begin their own research projects next week 🤩
Such an exciting day with an amazing group of students!

"My name is Sam Radliff. I just graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with a Bachelor's in Environmental Management. I live downstate just outside of Kingston, New York. I love hiking, kayaking, herping, and just generally being out in nature. As well as the ABB project, I'm also working on my capstone monitoring the fate of carrion at Greenwood's Conservancy. I'm really excited that my study can help with the reintroduction of the American burying beetle."

50 breeding pairs of ABB from our lab at SUNY Cobleskill will be making their way to Nantucket Island this month to take part in the annual reintroduction!
The NY team is excited to assist in growing the Northeastern ABB population! 🤩
