Seventeen-year-old Canadian student Anya Pogharian turned a high school assignment into a potential medical breakthrough by creating a low-cost dialysis machine. Motivated by the arduous treatment schedule dialysis patients face, she designed and built a working prototype using entirely recycled and inexpensive parts.
The total cost of her machine was just \$500, a dramatic reduction compared to the commercial standard, which costs around \$30,000. Her prototype performed exceptionally well in testing and shows potential to significantly shorten treatment times from hours down to mere minutes.
Anya’s innovative work has gained global attention, demonstrating how one student’s creativity and deep empathy can lead to real-world change. What began as a school project could eventually make life-saving dialysis treatment far more accessible in regions with limited medical resources.
