A story born from one of the darkest days in American history, but remembered for the extraordinary compassion of ordinary people who simply chose to help. This is the true story behind Come From Away—a Tony Award winning musical coming to the Coal City Performing Arts Center stage this weekend.

Coal City Theatre Department’s production will introduce audiences to Gander and the citizens who opened their schools, churches, and homes to stranded passengers from 95 countries. The remarkable acts that ensured everyone of the “Plane People,” were fed, clothed and connected.

Written by David Hein and Irene Sankoff, Come From Away, tells the story of what started as an average day in a small town turned into what has been described as an international sleepover.

Students in Ms. Drey’s English 1 classes at Coal City High School are learning what the 6 Traits of Writing are and how to use them to improve and grow their unique writing style. As they discover that becoming a stronger writer may be easier than they thought, these students are diving into what ideas, organization, word choice, voice, sentence fluency, and conventions truly hold to intrigue a reader. With the Six Traits as a guide, students are no longer simply asking, “Is my writing finished?”

Instead, they are beginning to ask a more important question: “How can I make my writing better?” Throughout the year, the students will continue practicing the Six Traits, and the classroom will soon be filled with stronger ideas, concise writing, impactful words, and a whole new generation of confident writers.

In October 2024, Coal City Intermediate School was forced to close its doors and relocate to Coal City Elementary School after damage was discovered to the roof over the original gymnasium. For the safety of students, staff and visitors, the closure was necessary.

Nearly two years later, the doors to the historic school building opened once again, welcoming students and staff back to their familiar learning center.

The return marks an exciting new chapter for Coal City Intermediate School.

“It has been great being back at CCIS. We are especially enjoying the extra space in PE this year,” said PE teacher Mr. McCleary.

The additional space has allowed students to explore new activities, including the rock wall.

“We have focused on teamwork, movement, and giving students more freedom to stay active and have fun. It has been great seeing their excitement and enthusiasm each day, Mr. McCleary said.

Coal City dropped a very close conference match to Streator on Tuesday. The final score at CInder Ridge Golf Course was Coal City 176, Streator 173.

Golfing for the Coalers were Frankie Ponio, 42; Jaxon Duke, 43; Reed Sulzberger, 45; Trevor Walker, 46; Kory Lovell, 47 and McKale Perino, 50.

Coal City falls to 4-3overall with a conference record of 2-1.

Tomorrow—Wednesday, Sept. 9—is the first Bike to School Day for students and staff in the Unit 1 School District

When riding a bicycle, be sure to follow these safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet
Adjust your bicycle to fit
Check your equipment—tires and breaks—before riding
See and Be Seen
Control your bicycle
Watch for and avoid hazards
Be sure to stay alert, yield to traffic when appropriate and look before turning and watch for cars—moving and parked.

Bike to school days will also be held on the following Wednesdays—Sept. 16, 23 and 30.
