The purpose of this Upcycled Garments class is to learn how you can create unique garments for yourself or to sell using preloved and reclaimed materials. This can include any textile that is unwanted or vintage such as tablecloths, sheets, trims, etc., all without using a sewing pattern.

You can choose to make a dress, skirt, tunic top, loose pants, pinafore, or a coat. You might be able to make more than one garment if you work at home in between classes.

Even if you're new to sewing, you can do this class. We'll be using simple straight or zigzag stitches. Collaborate with new friends while learning a skill that you can teach others and may even become a lifetime passion.

These simple and elegant knives have been hand crafted since the Iron Age and are a great starting project for any aspiring smith. This course will place an emphasis on making the craft of blacksmithing an enjoyable and attainable hobby for anyone. Take your basket weaving skills to the next level with Intermediate Basketry. In this class, you will build on the fundamentals you learned in the first session. You will make a Twill Weave Market Basket (a weaving method in which the weaver goes over and under more than one stake at a time. A Cat Head Basket ( a Shaker-inspired basket that includes four feet that look like cat ears). An introduction to ribbed basketmaking by making an Herb Basket, also known as a Pie Basket. Throughout all of history, people haven’t just been making pots, they’ve been making pots with sophisticated designs, patterns, and textures! Using examples from prehistoric pottery to modern day, we will make pots and learn different ways to make them uniquely our own with surface design. We will cover sgraffito, inlay, painted and stencil resists, and ways to create texture with natural objects, handmade stamps and rollers. Basic knowledge of throwing or hand building is necessary for this class, as the primary focus for demonstrations will be surface decoration, rather than forming techniques. 15-week course designed for those individuals who are seriously interested in becoming beekeepers and maintaining a honey bee apiary. Prior knowledge about honeybees not required. Subjects will include: Science of apiculture, types of honeybees, purchasing, equipment, clothing and the importance of honey bees to the environment. You will receive practical experience with building and setting up beehives, managing an apiary, controlling hive pests/diseases, and preparing for the NC State Beekeepers Certification test. Students will also document hive inspections, analyze honey, estimate hive populations, and learn how to prepare colonies for winter. Note: if you have any bee allergies, then this course IS NOT RECOMMENDED for you. Safety masks will be required and students will be responsible for purchasing Prof. Grade Bee Suit/jacket, protective gloves, a beekeeping supplies starting kit, and a tack or frame hammer. The blocks will serve as a foundation for creating new garments. Learn the techniques of stitching a pamphlet book together after beautifully decorating the book pages with fabric collage and a variety of embroidery stitches. Apply hand applique to the fabric covering your glass bottle. Curl, roll, and stitch fabric together to create fabric beads. We will learn to balance planning our designs and art making processes with intuition and improvisation. Experience sharing and instructional support in learning a variety of fabric art techniques which culminate in three 3D works of fiber art.
