This May, the Environmental Institute at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College staff and students joined local partners for a hands-on soils course, offered through the University of Minnesota, designed to open pathways into natural resources, agriculture, and health science careers.
Now in its second year, this two-week opportunity is funded through a USDA NIFA DEET grant and offered in partnership with Leech Lake Tribal College. This year partners included Red Lake Nation College, the University of Minnesota, USDA Forest Service, and USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service.
Students explored the science beneath their feet by digging soil pits and analyzing soil characteristics that occur in different parts of Minnesota. Participants who completed the full program also had the opportunity to earn two upper-division University of Minnesota credits at no cost through grant funding.
Miigwech to our partners for helping create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that connect students to the land and future career opportunities.

Congratulations to the eight members of the Native American chorus from Carlton County, including FDLTCC Faculty Member Lyz Jaakola and members of the Oshkii Giizhik Singers, on their recent trip to London to perform in the London premiere of Brent Michael Davids’ “Requiem for America” which earned international recognition.
Performing alongside the BBC Orchestra and Chorus, the Native American chorus was highlighted in multiple reviews and received a standing ovation for their powerful contribution to the production. The Guardian praised the moving finale, noting how the Indigenous singers’ voices affirmed a message of resilience and endurance: “We are still here.”
Congratulations on this remarkable achievement and thank you for inspiring communities both near and far.
