Have you noticed the pumpkin plant near the Early Childhood Wing? Ms. Sara's Pumpkin Jack is thriving!

What You Need
A small pie pumpkin
Carving tools
A clear plastic container or large jar with a lid (like an animal cracker or cheese ball container)
Potting soil (about 3 to 4 inches)
Packing tape
Water

Step-by-Step Instruction
1. Carve the Pumpkin: Carve a face on your pumpkin to make a jack-o'-lantern. Keep the seeds and pulp (guts) inside the pumpkin.
2. Set Up the Container: Pour 3 to 4 inches of moist potting soil into the bottom of your clear plastic container.
3. Place the Pumpkin: Set the carved pumpkin inside the container on top of the soil.
4. Seal It Up: Put the lid on the container and seal the edges tightly with packing tape to create a mini greenhouse.
5. Observe the Decomposition: Place the container in a spot where it can be watched weekly. Over the fall and winter, the pumpkin will soften, change color, and get covered in mold as bacteria and fungi break it down.
6. Watch for Sprouts: By late winter or early spring, seeds inside the decomposing pumpkin will start to sprout.
7. Once sprouts reach the top, open or unseal the container to let the plant grow or transplant it into an outdoor garden.
