Food preservation methods such as canning, fermentation, dehydration and freezing are great ways to preserve our food so that they last throughout the year! Make sure that you are doing it safely by attending Virginia Cooperative Extension's Food Preservation Conference on August 1st, 2026 at the Wytheville Meeting Center. Pick from over 15 sessions from beginning water bath canning to curing a ham!

ATTENTION 4-H’ERS! It is time for the 4-H PULLET PROJECT. Pullets will arrive in the Dickenson County Extension Office approximately April 23. The Dickenson County 4-H Club will give participating 4-H Club members 10 baby chicks to raise. The chicks will be Barred Plymouth Rock and are quite good layers.

You will receive 10 pullets (day old chicks) to care for. You will raise these chicks for about 20 weeks and bring 3 of your best pullets for a show and (optional) auction at the Dickenson County Fair, and the money will be yours to keep! The project fee is $47.

For more information, contact the Dickenson County Extension Office at 276-926-4605.
