One thing I am asked constantly as a coach is “how can my daughter throw harder?”
First thing is first there is no overnight fix. Your kid isn’t going to gain mph without consistency.
In order to gain speed the 3 things I would have my daughter focus on is
1. Strong mechanics
This includes having consistent snap & spin, having a hard launch (hinge the hips) , strong front side resistance, and strong internal rotation & whip. Without a solid foundation you will miss out on those extra miles per hour. She has to learn to use her whole body and not just her arm and shoulder.
2. Consistent training
Many girls say they want speed but aren’t willing to put in the work to reach their mph goals. Consistent drills geared toward gaining velocity, my personal favorite being long toss, will help them see those numbers go up on the radar more than just throwing a few on each pitch and calling it a day.
3. Strength training and conditioning
Let’s be real. A lot of pitchers are not truly in shape. They can throw their 3-5 innings in their tournament games but when it comes down to it they don’t have the stamina to go a full 7. Not to mention they aren’t training the specific muscle groups geared towards pitching. If you want to throw harder, you have to get stronger. Period.
