CCA Students Learn Important Fire Safety Lessons
Clinton Christian Academy students received an important lesson in fire prevention and safety when firefighters Matthew Kramm and Shain Kaiser visited the school on Monday, October 5. The firefighters presented two age-appropriate sessions—one for preschool through second grade and another for students in grades three through five—teaching students’ practical steps they can take to stay safe in the event of a fire.
Students learned the importance of having working smoke detectors in their homes and developing a family fire escape plan, including identifying a safe meeting place where everyone can gather after escaping. Firefighters also demonstrated their protective gear and discussed what children should do if they encounter smoke, including staying low to the ground, checking a door for heat before opening it, and knowing how to safely escape through a window. Students were also reminded that if their clothing catches fire, they should stop, drop, and roll to help put out the flames. If they are unable to escape from a second-story window, students were taught to signal for help by hanging a blanket or other visible item out the window.
A special emphasis was placed on the safe charging of electronic devices. Firefighters explained that many modern devices use lithium-ion batteries, which can become a fire hazard when improperly charged. Students were reminded to use the correct charging cord, charge devices only on a hard surface, never charge them overnight or while sleeping, and always keep charging devices where they can be monitored.
“We are grateful to our local firefighters for taking the time to teach our students these practical, potentially life-saving skills,” said CCA Administrator, Robin Ritchie. “Safety education is an important part of caring for our students, and we want them to have the knowledge and confidence to respond appropriately in an emergency. We also hope they will take these lessons home and help their families develop good fire-safety habits.”
CCA appreciates Firefighters Matt and Shain for investing in our students and equipping them with important safety knowledge. Their visit provided valuable information that students can take home and share with their families, helping everyone be better prepared in the event of a fire.
