Wow, y’all showed up! Our Community Luncheon featuring Appalachian storyteller and comedian Andi Marie Tillman is officially SOLD OUT! 🙌😂

We can’t wait to welcome a packed house to the Oak Ridge Conference Center on August 28 for an afternoon of laughter, storytelling, great food, handmade art, and plenty of Appalachian spirit. And with Bear Stephenson joining us as emcee, we know it’s going to be a fun one!

A brief pause in craft classes to share our community displays at LaFollette Court Assisted Living. We encourage older adults to display their work through family nights as well as semi-permanent displays in their communities. Displays like these create community support, connection, and memory retention!

✨ One Bracelet Started It All. ✨

Years ago, Sharon Wilcox was staying at a campground near Flagstaff, Arizona, when she heard someone was offering a beading class. Always curious about a new craft, Sharon decided to join.

She made one bracelet and fell in love. 💙

That one class became the beginning of a lifelong passion. Sharon taught herself new techniques, created thousands of pieces, taught classes wherever her travels took her, and eventually found her way to the Appalachian Arts Craft Center, where she now volunteers her time helping others discover the craft she loves.

“It comes easy for me, so I feel like it’s a gift I can share.”

There is so much more to Sharon’s story, from 13 years traveling the country in a motorhome to porcelain dolls, handmade teddy bears, her beloved garden and a very opinionated little pup named Peanut. 🐾

🌳 Sometimes a tree has other plans.

For John Polly, a fallen tree isn’t necessarily the end of the story. It might just be the beginning of something beautiful.

John processes, saws and dries the wood himself, letting its grain, knots and natural character guide what it will become.

As John says, “Wood has natural beauty. I don’t really have to be an artist. The wood speaks for itself.” 🪵

Meet Our Homeschool Club Instructor: Liz Shugart!

We're excited to have Liz Shugart leading Weaving 101 this fall!

In this beginner-friendly class, students ages 8–12 will learn about weaving while exploring color, texture, and creativity. Working on both tabletop and tapestry looms, students will create projects like mug rugs, wall hangings, and small purses while learning a variety of weaving techniques in a fun, encouraging environment.

With years of weaving experience and a passion for sharing traditional fiber arts, Liz helps students build confidence while creating something uniquely their own.

🍂 Fall Homeschool Club registration is now open! We offer a variety of hands-on classes in pottery, woodworking, blacksmithing, embroidery, and more for students of all skill levels. 🍂

✨ A Little Handmade Surprise Is in the Works! ✨

There’s been some extra creative energy in the studio at the Appalachian Arts Craft Center lately! 🎨💙

Our AACC team has been busy making special handmade gifts that will be given away to attendees at our upcoming Community Luncheon featuring the wonderfully funny and uniquely Appalachian Andi Marie Tillman!

Because when AACC hosts an event, you know a little creativity has to be part of the experience. 😉

We won’t spoil the surprise just yet, but we can tell you these gifts are being made right here in our studio with plenty of creativity, care, and AACC spirit.

It’s just one more reason we can’t wait to welcome everyone on August 28 for an afternoon of community, art, laughter, and a whole lot of Appalachian personality.

Basket weaving instructor, Katie Sharpe, recently traveled to Meadow View Assisted Living to guide the Appalachian traditional craft of basket weaving. A notoriously difficult set of skills are required for basket weaving, and we know our older adult participants can do hard things! They stuck with the process and had beautiful results.
