Located on 340 acres of Thornwell's campus in Clinton, South Carolina, LushAcres Farm is a vital support to Thornwell’s mission - To prevent child abuse and neglect, build and reunite families, and support healthy communities in the name of Jesus Christ. As a fully working farm, we offer the community farm fresh specialty crops, meats, and family friendly festivals and markets throughout the year. This behavior is called fanning. Worker honey bees station themselves at the hive entrance and rapidly vibrate their wings to move air through the colony.

Bees fan for several important reasons:

1. Ventilation and cooling: They circulate air to help keep the brood area within its proper temperature range, especially during hot weather.

2. Humidity control: Fanning removes moist air from the hive, which also helps prevent excessive dampness and mold.

3. Ripening honey: Fresh nectar contains a lot of water. Airflow helps evaporate that water so the bees can turn nectar into stable, capped honey.

4. Scent communication: Sometimes the bees are not primarily cooling the hive—they are broadcasting the colony’s Nasonov pheromone, essentially making a “home is here” scent signal for returning bees.
