Our brother Rob is no longer with us. But the memories of training, laughing and talking will forever be emblazoned into our memories at GUMA.

Rob was a courageous and fearless training partner. He always pushed the pace and made us work harder. Those same qualities carried into his career as a Captain with the Newark Fire Department. Rob served his community and country as a martial artist, a veteran and as a first responder — always willing to help, always respectful.

We will miss Rob and his warrior spirit.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, loved ones, and the Newark Fire Department.

Fifteen years.

Greg started with me as a white belt — back when I wasn’t even a black belt yet.

We’ve had disagreements. He left. He trained elsewhere. He came back.

And when he came back, he was different. More mature. More open-minded.

Greg manages something most people in this room don’t have to think about every day. He handles it quietly — and he still shows up.

A black belt isn’t about being the toughest guy in the room. It’s about time. It’s about growth. It’s about staying in the game.

Greg stayed.

That’s what this belt represents.

Proud of you.

Thank you to Miguel, my striking coach.
For such a young man, he has the depth, discipline, and heart of someone far beyond his years. He dedicates himself fully to these athletes. He loves what he does, and it shows every day in the gym. He’s become part of my family—like one of my own sons.

Now to Darren.
Two years ago, he made the decision to change his life and fully give himself back to the martial arts lifestyle. He committed to his training, to getting better at his jiu jitsu and wrestling, and to showing up day after day. No missed workouts. Making weight the right way. Doing everything it takes to be a champion.

On top of all that, this kid is as tough as they come. He has the heart of a fu***ng lion. A true warrior.

And none of this happens in isolation.
It took the whole team. A big thank you to everyone who showed up in the corner last night— , .0__ , , —and to everyone at Grappling University who trained with him, pushed him, and supported him. We are his family.

I’m proud of the work.
I’m proud of the people.
I love this gym. I love this life.

It is with sadness that we share the passing of Joe Ritacco’s mother. The wake will be held Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at S W Brown & Son Funeral Home, Inc. in Nutley. Please keep Joe and his family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
