A big thank you to our CTAS volunteers who repaired the dome and documented its repair! 😊
The seal had been leaking and needed repairs, so these volunteers came to the rescue to put our dome back in working condition. Kudos!

Dan – arranged the equipment rental and pick-up of the lift

The peak of the meteor shower is tonight, with the best viewing between 1:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Since we have a new moon, if you’re in a dark area, the show in the night sky should be wonderful!

For those registering for the open house, if the event says it is full, please come anyway. We have been having some quirks with our website registration process and are working to fix it.

We are in the Dog Days of Summer here in Central Texas! Does the phrase “Dog Days of Summer” conjure up images of cute pups under the summer sun? If so, you will be surprised to know that the phrase originates from the night sky! As History.com tells us:
“According to Greek Mythology, Sirius was the dog of the hunter Orion, and the ancient Romans placed the star in the constellation Canis Major (Latin for “Greater Dog”). The Romas thus referred to the sweltering period when the rising of the sun and Sirius converged as the “dies caniculares” or “days of the dog star.” By the 1500s, the English world began to call the same summertime point on the astronomical calendar as the ‘dog days.’”
In the United States, the traditional timing of the Dog Days of Summer is between July 3 and August 11, so we are in the Dog Days of Summer now!

We are excited to share that we will be getting a new solar telescope soon! This will allow us to expand our outreach within the community. Although the telescope will be purchased with funds from our general fund, we would appreciate any donations that would help us to defray the cost and replenish our general fund.
