🌟 Member Spotlight Mondays are back! 🌟

As a new school year gets underway, we’re bringing back one of our favorite ways to celebrate the people who make school nutrition happen across New Jersey.

Each Monday, we want to introduce our community to an NJSNA member and recognize the work they do every day — and we need your help filling our spotlight calendar!

Whether you’ve been in school nutrition for decades or are just getting started, we want to hear from you.

Healthy students need healthy meals—and strong school nutrition programs need the resources to make them possible.

The new Harvest to Hallways initiative will invest in school kitchens, Farm to School programs, local food procurement, and nutrition research—all aimed at helping schools serve healthier meals while strengthening connections with local agriculture.

We’re excited to see this investment in our students and the programs that nourish them every day.

🌱 From The Garden Plate Archives 🌱

In this throwback from the Fall 2024 issue of The Garden Plate, George Carrero explores how global flavors, farm-to-table practices, customizable meals, and student involvement can turn the cafeteria into a place for discovery.

Because school meals aren't just about what lands on the tray—they're an opportunity to introduce students to new foods, cultures, and experiences along the way. 🍽️

“It is a FOOD bill. It is a NUTRITION bill.” 👏👏👏

That message certainly resonates within our community. The Farm Bill connects agriculture with nutrition, food access, conservation, and the strength of our food system—and its impact matters here in New Jersey.

Thursday Thoughts:🌾 President Allen Carter’s Thoughts on the Agricultural Act of 2026 (Farm Bill 2.0)

"New Jersey agriculture is far more diverse than just the commodities one traditionally associates with farming. Our farmers produce an incredible range of products—from fruits and vegetables to nursery and greenhouse crops, flowers, turf, dairy, livestock and so much more.

The Farm Bill provides the tools our farmers need to manage risk, invest in their operations, conserve our natural resources, support agricultural research, and keep producing the safe, affordable food our families depend on.

But its importance reaches far beyond the farm.

It helps shape the availability, affordability, and reliability of the food we buy, supports programs that protect our natural resources, strengthens rural and local economies, and helps ensure that American farmers can continue producing food here at home.

That’s why, as president of the New Jersey Farm Bureau, I believe it is vital for EVERY American to understand;

It is a FOOD bill.
It is a NUTRITION bill.
It is a CONSERVATION bill.
It is a RURAL DEVELOPMENT bill.

And ultimately, it is about the future of American agriculture.

Congress has important work ahead. We need a Farm Bill that recognizes the challenges facing farmers today, strengthens our nation’s food security, protects our ability to produce food here at home, and gives farmers the tools they need to continue doing what they do best.”
