Use a pop filter.
A pop filter helps reduce plosive sounds like “P” and “B” without affecting your tone. It also lets you stay close to the mic without distortion.

We wanted to share some news we received from a from a VFA graduate. You never know where life will take you but YOU CAN HAVE A SAY in choosing your path. Now that Ryan has dusted off the equipment and won an award who knows what's next?
"I hope you and the VFA team are doing well! I wanted to share some good news. The ad agency I work at, Marsch Creative, recently won a Bronze Award in the national Healthcare Advertising Awards for a "Medical Minute" radio interview series that I write, record, provide host voiceover for, edit and produce.
This series has been a wild ride from the start, because we originally recorded/produced it through a local radio station, but the announcer was too "announcer-y." Since I had VFA training, I proposed that the client give me a shot. Cut to: one wild weekend where I dusted off my VFA materials and cracked open the boxes of audio gear I had purchased after my master class – all of which had lain dormant for a year as my day job consumed me – set everything up, used the VFA binder to walk me through recording/Pro Tools basics, and recorded a sample spot hunkered over a desktop mic in my clothes closet at home.
The client liked my more conversational host voice, and for the last year, I have served as host for the series and taken over production, recording every spot onsite at the client's hospital using a portable system that I researched and developed to turn any standard hospital conference room into a shielded recording studio.
I would never have been prepared to do all of this, much less deliver a radio series that is award-worthy, without all of the training and support I've received from VFA. From the intro class, master class and workshops, to the excellent VFA workbooks and Pro Tools VO template, to all of the graduate support resources online, VFA has been there to help me tackle every aspect of my voice acting career so far.
A huge thank you to everybody on the VFA team for all of the support!
Best regards,
Ryan "

Your unique voice is your natural-born VO superpower

Your voice is as unique as a fingerprint.

And that’s a massive asset in VO.

It’s amazing really.

No one has a voice like yours.

Your s’s are unique.

Your rhythm and speed are unique.

Your natural, regional accent is unique.

Your experiences which inform the way you speak and interpret a script are unique.

It’s all you.

It’s what will naturally set you apart from your competition.

In this sense, it doesn’t matter what your voice sounds like because each voice is unique.

However, there is one way the sound of your voice may matter...

Your natural voice may fit best in a specific voiceover genre.

This is where your natural sound MIGHT matter.

Stay consistent.
Once you find a mic position that works, stick with it. Consistency ensures your recordings match from session to session, which clients really appreciate.

I was so thrilled to get my first VO job through Voices.com. It was a very easy process and a fun recording to make. I got hired by an advertising agency in Kingston, Jamaica to record PA announcements for a big launch party for LIME. LIME is a cable TV, broadband, telephone and wireless company that serves the British islands in the Caribbean. Tonight, my voice will be played for guests at the big event, which will be aired on four Jamaican TV stations and on Facebook. I got great feedback from the client: “A pleasure working with her, super professional, amazing voice, very, very efficient! This is great motivation to get out there and look for more work! Thanks VFA for helping me get started!

Avoid empty rooms.
Bare walls and hard floors reflect sound harshly, creating a boxy or echoey recording. Adding rugs, furniture, or panels makes a big difference in sound quality.
