I’ve Been Told I’ve Got a Great Voice, So I Should Be A Voice Actor.

This the most basic of the comments we hear. Sometimes from the individual, sometimes from a relative or friend. Having a great voice isn’t the be all and end all of voiceover.

Of course, it can help. Being tall doesn’t make you a great basketball player. It just gives you a slight advantage over others if you train and have a natural ability in what might come next.

Controversially, we are going to suggest that having a great voice might actually be a disadvantage. Much of the industry today is seeking out an “everyman”, the person next door. One of the most frequent notes we see on casting is “no announcers whatsoever – real sounding person wanted”.

Interestingly, a distinctive voice is potentially more helpful. You’re looking to stand out, be something different and to capture attention.

The Truth:

If you’ve got a great voice, don’t believe that you made it and it’s a walk in the park. On the other hand, if you don’t have a stereotypical great voice, understand that hard work and technique will make a difference.

Voice acting is not about having a perfect voice—it’s about versatility and authenticity. The voiceover industry thrives on unique, genuine voices. Whether you have a high-pitched voice, a quirky accent, or a distinctive tone, there’s a niche for you.

What matters most is your ability to take direction, convey emotion, create different characters, and connect with your audience. Voiceover artists are often cast for their character or the personality they bring to a role, not necessarily the “ideal” vocal quality.

Read through your script aloud several times to get comfortable and find the right pacing and emotion. If the script is long then just reading a couple of portions of it to get in the right groove with it is fine but there is rarely any reason to cold read without looking at a script first.

It is so important for you to choose the right producer to assist you in the creation of your first demos. Starting a voiceover career without a reliable guide is a daunting task for someone that doesn't know the ins-and-outs of the industry. You need to find someone who is accustomed to working with new voice actors. Someone who can help you get the most out of your voice and vocal delivery. I couldn't of done it without you..." Thank you V.F.A. for giving me the know how and motivation for landing my first gig! My first client was half way around the world in Estonia. Character voices are generally used to give personality to animated characters. However they’re not confined to that specific genre. Character voices can also do audio only projects such as commercials and audio books. Character voices require more acting muscles than standard narration. Character voices are a fun, creative and typically a long running gig. The one thing that prevents most voice talent from doing authentic character voices is the fear of looking silly. As soon as you get over that you can let yourself go and really develop your characters. So have fun and be silly.

Senior Voice Over is Versatile and Not ‘Old-Sounding’
While it’s exciting to talk about the future of voice over, it’s also important to remember that opportunity is still plentiful now, as well. Voice actors who have middle-aged to senior sounding voices are finding great opportunities in a diversity of voice over work, from documentaries and video games, to luxury brand commercials, e-learning and more.
And on this front, it pays to recognize that a mature or senior ‘voice age’ does not mean an ‘old-sounding’ voice over. In fact, the range of older voices is wide and diverse – and is not to be confused with the exaggerated, ‘old-sound,’ which is often portrayed in cartoons.

Learn to use Enhancers. Non-verbal sounds (“enhancers”) are powerful tools in voice over and conversation, as they can completely change the emotional context of a sentence. You never want to add actual words (or remove them from a script) but enhancers help enhance the emotion the copy writer and voice talent is trying to get across to the listener.
