Hatching chickens! We have eggs coming in the mail from Precious Peepers-Cochins & Brahmas on Friday, they are bantam mille (pictured below) and chocolate cochins! Incubation starts Monday!

A bantam chicken is a small chicken that is a quarter to a fifth as heavy as a large-fowl chicken. Most bantams weigh less than two pounds! 🐣

Incubating chicken eggs requires a 21-day process where temperature, humidity, and egg turning are carefully controlled. The process involves using an incubator to mimic the natural conditions a broody hen provides, ensuring optimal development for the embryo. Throughout this process, the campers will be checking and adjusting the humidity & candling the eggs to check for development.

Enrolled parents can check the calendar in their Brightwheel app for information about special events like this that are happening throughout the summer!

Quick chick update!

The Peep Squad is doing great and growing fast. We recently moved them from a cardboard box to a kiddie pool and they are loving it! Our students have more opportunity to observe and enjoy the chicks now that they have more room to explore, and it’s been such a fascinating learning opportunity for all of us. Of course, with lower sides, they quickly discovered how to fly right out of the pool, so we had to make some adjustments. 😜
They love being around people, and when you sit next to the pool they rush right over for snuggles (and to see if we have any watermelon or yogurt, their favorite treats). They’re a little less than 4 weeks old and in just a few short weeks they’ll be fully feathered and ready to move outside! We’re so grateful to be able to share this experience with our students and are looking forward to many more chicken adventures 🐥 🐓

We are so excited about the new structure Brittany June Holscher generously donated time & materials to build over our outdoor group table! 😍 We plan to plant beans and squash around the edges to grow across the top as spring approaches, but even as it is now it’s already been a huge hit with our students - lots of bear hunts in the “cave” and trains traveling through the tunnel the last few days! 🐻 🚂 Can’t wait to see what other creative ideas our kiddos come up with to incorporate this structure in their imaginative play adventures 💕

Happy Birthday/Anniversary Lavender & Lime! It has been such a beautiful first year with lots of learning and many new friends. I like to think I dreamed up this place but the truth is, Libby & Jess took my vision and brought it to life, I couldn't be more grateful for the amazing service, friendship, leadership, education, and love they provide. 🥰 Here is to many, many, many more years (maybe one day June will be their assistant LOL) 🥂 🥳 ~Brittany

Montessori Myth: Montessori materials are prohibitively expensive

The truth: Official Montessori materials can be expensive, but they are great inspiration for hand-making your own work!

In our classroom, we use a combination of didactic Montessori materials and handmade work. Handmade work is equally effective when thoughtfully prepared and can often be made with materials you might already have on hand. The works pictured are currently on rotation in the classroom and each cost less than $5 to assemble!

The Montessori method was originally created for underprivileged children with additional support needs, so we feel strongly that cost should never be a factor that prevents families from implementing it with their children. And as a program that values sustainability, we love introducing new work to the classroom made from materials that might have otherwise been thrown away!
