Today, Tomlinson Hall entered a new chapter in its storied history as a central space for Case. A refurbished first floor lobby is now the Tomlinson Café—a crêperie, smoothie station and coffee bar for the campus community.

Many alumni recall Tomlinson Hall as the student center for Case Institute of Technology. The café took over space long occupied by the Department of International Services. The result is a bright, 128-seat restaurant that shares the first floor with the offices of the Case Alumni Association.

CWRU climbed seven places to rank No. 44 nationally in the 2027 rankings of U.S. News & World Report, which were released today. The return to Top 50 status is reflected in other notable rankings bringing recognition to the university.

Forbes’ magazine recently named Case one of the nation’s 20 “New Ivies” while Time magazine ranked the university #27 on its list of The World’s Top Universities.

“I appreciate that rankings like these continue to raise awareness nationally and internationally about the value of a Case Western Reserve University education,” University President Eric Kaler said in a press release.

The No. 44 U.S. News ranking matches CWRU’s showing in 2023. Kaler attributed the rise, in part, to the university’s improved graduation rates.

“Obviously no single list can fully demonstrate the exceptional work happening in classrooms, labs and clinical spaces across our campus, (but) I am pleased this ranking recognizes areas that matter most: preparing students to graduate and excel in their careers,” he said.

Here is your math problem of the week!

Every (most) Monday mornings this semester, the problem will be posted outside of Sears 540 (and also here on our CAA social media pages).

These problems are open to anyone (undergraduate, students, graduate students, faculty, staff, and people just walking down the hallway).

To participate, you must submit your solution outside of Chris Butler’s office (Sears 577) by 4pm on Friday of that week (please include an email address so you can be contacted if you’re the winner of the week).

You are welcome to solve the problem on your own, you just will not be considered for a prize.

Answers must be written in correct mathematical notation. Unless otherwise specified, all answers must be exact and simplified (the second graphic in this post will give guidelines for answer simplification).

Judges will determine the winner from all the correct solutions submitted.
