Authorities said Christopher Gillum had a handgun, roughly 200 rounds of ammunition and plans to kill Black people at a New Orleans festival. Months later, the white former police officer is free—and faces no charges anywhere.

Gillum was arrested at a Florida hotel in April after investigators alleged he was traveling to Louisiana to carry out a mass shooting and then die by “suicide by cop.” He was extradited, held without bond and faced a state terrorism charge carrying up to 15 years.

But a Louisiana grand jury declined to indict him. Prosecutors pointed to jurisdictional issues, including that the alleged threat was made in North Carolina and Gillum never entered Louisiana before his arrest.

The evidence was enough to launch a multistate investigation and keep him jailed without bond—but not enough to put him on trial.
