Blessed Michael McGivney is readily recognized by his followers. The parlor interior of the 1870s is easily identified. The furnishings are decoratively Victorian, they speak to a middle-class level of living in New Haven.

But swipe to detail of the sofa and the house seen in the background. Did you catch it? They’re drawn, not photographed!

Photographer John J. Tierney – an early member of the Knights of Columbus – was a practitioner of photo editing, 1870s-style. Presumably Mr. Tierney removed distracting or unwanted elements in the original photograph and replaced them with elements that were more suitable or “better.”

In the 1870s, the practice wasn’t odd or unusual. Today we see a great deal of photo editing and use of filters.

Careful examination with a new perspective often proves useful towards a more complete understanding of what we’re looking at.
