The Department of Chemistry and Physics at DSU houses the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics, and Astronomy. It is also home to the Roy L.
Delta State University is located in Cleveland, Mississippi. The DSU Department of Physical Sciences offers courses in chemistry, physics, and astronomy. and Clara Belle Wiley Planetarium which is used for astronomy classes and also presents special programs for schools and the general public. The Department of Physical Sciences also has a student affiliate group of the American Chemical Society.
Members participate in a wide range of programs and activities that enhance their college experience and prepare them for successful careers. The department offers four different B.S. degrees in chemistry:
General Concentration - For students who want to become chemists. ACS Certified Concentration - For students who want to become chemists or attend graduate school. More rigorous than the general chemistry concentration, this program gives graduates increased opportunities when seeking employment. Premedical Sciences Concentration - For pre-med, pre-dental, and pre-pharmacy students. Includes chemistry degree plus additional pre-professional prerequisites required or recommended by the professional schools. Helps to provide the best preparation for professional school entrance exams. Chemistry/General Science Education Concentration - Designed for students who want to teach chemistry and physical science at the secondary level. Master of Science in Natural Sciences, physical sciences emphasis - For those desiring advanced study primarily in chemistry. Both teaching oriented and research oriented options are available. Advising:
All majors in the physical sciences department are assigned a personal advisor who is familiar with their particular degree program. Advisors can help plan class schedules, help keep up with curriculum requirements, help with applications to graduate or professional schools, and assist with career planning. A number of scholarships and awards are presented to science majors each year. These awards are funded by generous donations by alumni and other supporters of the sciences at DSU.
