*Open to the Public - Come learn with us!

This all-day seminar will cover everything from tree pathogens and gardening with continuous color to the birds of prey in Ohio skies. We will also cover safe and effective use of herbicides, get an update on TICKS in Ohio, and much more!

When: Saturday, September 26, 2026 / 8:15 am - 3:30 pm
Where: Educational Service Center / 6393 Oak Tree Blvd. Independence, OH (near I-77 & Rockside Road
Keynote: Enrico Bonello, OSU Professor of Plant Pathology, will discuss why forest pathogens and insect invaders kill our trees.
Cost: $65.00 - includes lunch

Plant Spotlight: Polka Dot Plant - Perfect for Fall Containers

Polka dot plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya), also known as freckle face, baby’s tears, flamingo plant, and measles plant, is a popular plant for its spotted pink, white, or red foliage. It performs well as an annual, adding lovely color & visual texture to pots. It is native to Madagascar where it is an herbaceous perennial. The plant loses its color if placed in the shade, so make sure to site it in bright filtered light.

Celebrate National Caterpillar Day at the Capital Theatre with the Western Reserve Land Conservancy!

This 60-minute screening of "The Extraordinary Caterpillar" takes a fascinating look at the important role caterpillars play in healthy ecosystems. It features the work of The Caterpillar Lab, the renowned entomologist David Wagner, and Doug Tallamy, whose research has helped change the way we think about native plants and the insects that depend on them.

Following the movie, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A with
Amy Roskilly of Cuyahoga Soil & Water Conservation District and Dave Tomashefski of Meadow City Nursery. They'll talk about what we can do in our own yards and communities to support caterpillars, moths, butterflies, and other wildlife.

Saving seeds is an economical and joyful way to renew the beauty of your backyard garden. Participants will learn how to identify various types of seeds, learn when seeds are ready for harvest, and how they can be stored for the following growing season. Join Seed Bank Manager, Kim Lessman, to learn about seed saving best practices in your own backyard.

Lessman is the Seed Bank Manager for Holden Forests & Gardens. Initiated in 2023, the Holden Seed Bank is working to source, collect, and redistribute native seeds of local ecotype to support restoration and reforestation efforts in northeast Ohio.
